HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- For school bus driver Jamille Aine, a cold is more than an inconvenience. His employer does not offer paid sick days, so if he can't shake the bug, he may not be able to pay his bills.

 

Some 46 million U.S. workers lack paid sick days, but lawmakers in 12 states - including California, Connecticut, Minnesota and West Virginia - have proposed legislation in the past year that would require businesses to provide them.

 

Dale Butland of Ohioans for Healthy Families, an advocacy group pushing a November ballot initiative that would require employers to offer paid sick days, said the effort picked up steam in Columbus and other state capitals because federal legislation has stalled.

 

"This is the next frontier in assuring workplaces are safe," said Kate Kahan, director of the work and family program at the Washington-based National Partnership for Women & Families, which lobbies on paid sick leave and other workplace and health care issues.

If your employer doesn't offer sick days, I say find another job with a company that does offer sick days and be sure to tell your former employer why you left.

Agreed. In the school system, we get 10 sick days per year. An additional ten are added on each year, so you can accumulate quite a few if you don't miss. If you do use them up and then get sick, you're docked that day's pay. Nobody wants that.

Another way for gov't to hold back and try to control private enterprise. Just another step toward socialism. Benefits (insurance, vacation, sick days) are as much of a compensation package as salary is for employers to attract better hires. If you want these things, do what is needed for you to get a better job. If the Dems had their way, the house keepers at Super 8 would have the same benefits as the CEO of Microsoft.

Like anything else, you know there would be people to abuse this. You have the moral fortitude not to, good for you. More folks, I'm afraid, wouldn't.

WOW I work for that huge Mega-Store company and I have had paid sick days for 25 years. Even though the unions, democrats and lately even BHO have said that they don't have any benefits. Seems Wally world isn't has bad as some would have you believe.

Isn't ten times more expensive to recruit/train/employ someone new than it is to maintain the existing employee? I've heard that somewhere, but can't recall where.

Let's not act like companies grant vacations and sick days out of the goodness of their hearts. If some businesses had their d'ruthers, the help would be working 60-70 hour weeks with no vacations, sick days, etc.

I thought labor unions fixed all these problems. If the gov't does the job of the unions, then we don't need the unions. But then, the dems wouldn't have anyone to endorse them and pack them financially.

You are right that some businesses would/do take advantage of workers. If they feel they are being treated unfairly, then find another job. Don't wait for the gov't to dictate every step you take. Have some iniatative and take care of yourself.

Obviously, you don't have children either.

Not every sick day is used for the adult being sick but rather staying home with a sick child.

 

And I have to admit, some of my very best days is when my kids were smaller and were sick. My son and I would get some blankets on a cold winter day that he was sick, lay on the couch, stick in Star War movie marathons and let him rest.
