Derek did play ball for a few years. Kyle Pfetzer L P 1B also was on the team that won back to back regions in 96-97. He went on to pitch at NKU and had a pretty good career there. Matt Mason might have been the C those years also.

Before the 9th Region baseball championship game started on Tuesday at Simon Kenton High School, fans were talking about Highlands pitcher Eric Glaser being drafted by the Boston Red Sox.

 

After the game, however, Highlands sophomore Derek Smith was the main topic of conversation.

 

Smith hit a two-run homer and pitched the final three innings to nail down a 5-3 win over Holy Cross that completed a unique trifecta for the Bluebirds.

 

Highlands became the first local high school to win regional championships in football, boys' basketball and baseball in the same school year.

 

 

Chris Hamblen was the catcher from '97 to '98, and possibly even '96. With Glaser on the mound, that team was almost unbeatable. Pfetzer was a solid #2 on that team, and could've been a #1 on many others. However, after those two, the quality of pitching really dropped off IMO. Baseball was Smith and Lorenzen's 3rd best sport at the time.

Rob's a good guy and quality teacher. I don't mean to take anything away from him. I don't believe he has the same passion for the game that Jeremy does. I can't imagine why he would be given another chance. Like I said, the program needs to continue moving forward not backwards.

 

Totally agree with you. For this program to move forward, Jeremy is the guy.

Folks I would guarentee Jeremy is going to be the headcoach, its just a matter of time. My only question is I thought to be a headcoach at a school you also had to be a teacher at a school, whether its the same school or not. Could someone clarify this rule for me, because Im not sure it could just be a pattern that headcoaches are also teachers..?

Teachers get the 1st opportunity. If there are no interested teachers it goes to the most qualified applicant with atleast something like 40 credit hours (don't quote me on the number). If no one in that criteria applied it goes to whoever the school board and AD feels the best coach is as long as they can pass a background check.

Look for interviews to be held this week. With the FB bye week, it will allow those conducting the interviews time to address the position. I'm looking for the baseball program to move forward in the very near future.

Agree with it moving in the right direction, I know some of the players are working really hard in the weight room, and they need someone to promote that throughout the whole program, not just a few players.
