The other top priority is making sure the young pitchers (Volquez, Cueto) don't get overextended with their pitch counts and innings total and that others that could contribute next season (Masset, Thompson, perhaps Bailey, etc.) get an extended look in September.

Once the rosters expand, the Reds could very well, make some of these moves for evaluation. Once all the D'Backs arrive, it might make the puzzle pieces, a little more defined. Use Andy Phillips to play the infield if moves are made with Votto and Encarnacion. Might as well get started on 2009 now ...
August 12, 200818 yr Off the top of my head the only guys that are worth having are BP, Keppinger, Harriston, Bruce, Votto, Volquez, Harang, Cueto, Cordero, Bray, Burton, Lincoln, and maybe a few other guys in the pen. They should not pay much money to anyone else there is no reason to. The only exception would be Arroyo and maybe Edwim who are decent but I don't think he should be making a ton of money.

August 14, 200818 yr Who on this list of free agents, would you like to see the Reds go after? They are going to have a little cash, but the pickins seem slim to me. Pat Burrell could be a nice power bat from the right side, but will probably cost way to much. Carl Crawford could be the leadoff hitter this Team needs, but why would he want to leave Tampa? August 15, 200818 yr If anyone is interested: On wednesday, Homer Bailey (4-7, 4.50) remained winless since April as he didn't factor into the decision. Bailey allowed all four Hens runs in 6.1 innings of work; he walked three and struck out four. On a brighter note: In his second game since being promoted to Louisville, Drew Stubbs hit his first AAA HR. He was 2-4, 2 runs scored, and a walk, in the Bats 6-4 victory. On thursday the Bats beat the Mud Hens again, the final was 4-2. Matt Maloney improved to 10-4 on the year. 6.1 IP 4 H 1 R 1 ER 2 BB 7 SO.
August 15, 200818 yr I would like to see Dusty go and get somebody who has a little more clubhouse control and will consistantly stress defensive fundamentals from spring training through out the whole season, but I don't see Mr. C letting Walt eat his contract. As soon as the last out is made, Walt needs to be standing at the door with a pink slip in his hand for Corey Patterson and Josh Fogg, enough said, lets not beat that horse anymore! Start looking to make a trade for a catcher, centerfielder and third baseman using Encarnacion, Freel, Hopper, Majewski, Weathers, Merker, Coffee and a slew of minor leaguers to try to get some help at those positions. Make the best deals he can get using some of those named because I don't see them as long term answers for this team. Let the 1st Round draft pick walk, take the money he waqnts and try for a free agent at one of those positions and take the 2 first round picks next year and draft 2 pitchers. IMHO!

A LHP would be nice and it seems like he's ready to get a shot... Just keep throwing Fogg out there I guess...
