Why so many budget cuts?

Featured Replies

Why have there been so many budget cuts across the state in most school districts? Wasn't one of the arguments for the state lottery that it would generate millions and millions of dollars for our schools?

I agree, I thought the lottery was supposed to be the cure all for education money. Does anyone know exactly what % goes to education now?

Surely somebody has an answer.

Buget cuts with higher expectations. Doesn't make much sense.

I know you aren't referring to the college level with this post, but there have been some rather large budget cuts on the college level as well.

I think part of the problem is the pay raises mandated by Fletcher and Patton. Neither of these pay raises were funded by the state.

PH and I have often talked about that as well. It does not seem that any of the money is going to the schools...I hope I am wrong on this.

And I've heard lottery sales are up.

I can tell you the KY lotto does send a certain percentage for education. It was never designed that 100% of the profit would fund education. Most of the money is used to run the Lotto Corp.

As for the budget cuts, we have legislators that can't do simple math. We spend more than we take in with revenue. It is a national trend. We have it at all levels of government. That is why some many Americans do it as well.

If we only cut back what was spent in transportation department we could be ahead. Think of all the unneeded construction projects that benefit someone who has done a political favor?

I heard the lottery spokesman address this on the Francene talk show one morning.

Lottery funds are now used (by legislative directive) to cover the costs of various college scholarship programs. That way they "fufil" the promise that lottery funds will be used for education.

I remember when they pitched it to the public to get it passed that every penny other than what it took to run the lottery would go to education. It seems our government lied to us again. I just can't believe it, Im shocked.

Its also where the KEES money comes from.

I am not for sure but I think that only a small percentage of lottery money actually makes it to education.

Polston says when you don't win, the money goes to college scholarships and grants.

Polston says they're about to spend they're one billionth dollar toward scholarships in Kentucky since 1999.

The above is a quote from a lottery spokesman, Chip Polston, in response to a story about lottery sales increasing as people try to weather current economic woes by striking it rich in the lottery. It's an interesting story on WYMT's site and I recommend you either read the story or watch the video.

BTW, considering lottery sales, isn't one billion a rather pidling amount for almost ten years of scholarships?

By the way, that's WYMT's use of the word "they're" in place of "their". Not mine. ;)
