Colleges are way more expensive now. I think tuition at UK in 1999 was 1,150 or something around that, in 2007 it was around 3000 or 4000. Morehead is currently charging students more for tuition if they take more credit hours per semester.

College kids deserve a break. How does the government expect us to pay all of this money? We deserve and are owed financial aid for the simple fact that we pay taxes and should get something for it. We pay a lot of taxes for a bunch of ridiculous stuff and dumb programs so I don't understand how you can say that we are not owed anything.

 

I would like to see you come to school and get no financial aid, have to pay 3,000+ to the school per semester plus around 500+ for books, then still have to have money for gas, living expenses, and food. So before you sit there and say no one owes us any financial aid or help you might want to try being a college student now (with the constant yearly raises in tuition).

 

I'm a college student right now, and I agree 100% with LN, no one owes "us" a darn thing. I'm sick of hearing college kids cry about tution and this and that. Why does everyone think they are entitled to things in life? I've worked since I was 15, and have had one 2 week period since then where I was unemployed. Over the summers I've worked full-time to save up as much money as humanly possible. It's not that hard to get by, you just have to be willing to put in the hard work to do it. Sadly most college students anymore are way too lazy to do it.

We are having to pay money to the government to keep all these murderer's and rapist's alive but apparently the government can't help by providing some financial assistance for kids trying to get a degree to start a career? I do remember when I was young and thought free money should be flowing my way.

 

I will agree that the cost of education is becoming a challenge and one that needs a solution.

 

However, for you to say you get nothing for all of the taxes you pay is simply selfish, myopic, or naive.

 

Lastly, Leatherneck faced the exact same challenges you did when he went to Centre so if he can make it.....

I can only speak for myself. During school I work 20 hours a week and in the summer I work 40 hours. Year around I juggle two jobs.

 

As someonelse said, more expensive for one. And more kids are going to college now. In order to be successful now you HAVE to have somekind of degree. Twenty or thirty years ago I dont think that was the case.

Thanks. My guess is that most of us on here that grew up "poor" (and by that I mean had to borrow money to attend college and work jobs while in college) probably agree with our line of thinking.

Let me add that I truly admire kids that have to pay their own way to college and the ones that work during the school year. That's tough work.

Let me add that I truly admire kids that have to pay their own way to college and the ones that work during the school year. That's tough work.

 

You're telling me, last semester I was taking 18 credit hours, working on campus 10 hours a week and working part time at Speedway 30-35 hours a week. Needless to say I was plenty glad when summer arrived.

I can't speak for every university but I have seen the budget plan for MSU and seen how they spend the money and where it goes and I can tell you that whenever they get the money doesn't go towards keep tuition lower.

 

Recently MSU said that they were on a budget crunch and had to cut back spending. Well the President just got a raise and a $20,000 bonus to raise his salary to $250,000 a year. Every faculty member got a percentage raise also. But we're supposed to be cutting back spending I thought. Not to mention the raise in tuition and they raised parking permits to $360 a semester and dorms are between $1500 and $3000 a semester.

If I don't get that break, I won't be complaining about not getting it, as I'm not entitled to it.

And how much money are you earning that results in you paying taxes of any consequence to justify your position that since you pay taxes you deserve some of it back? I pay a bundle of taxes each year and I don't think I'm entitled to anything or to get any of it (other than Social Security) back

 

As for gas money, I didn't own a car in college until right before I graduated and that was a piece of junk that was given to me by an older brother. If he hadn't given it to me, I wouldn't have been justified in being upset that I didn't get it. Sell your car so you don't need gas money and ride the bus, ride a bike or walk.

 

And don't talk to me about tuition. What you are paying now is less than I paid at Centre over two decades ago. No big sympathies from me on tuition.

I think the argument is how they are rising compared to 20 years ago.

 

And at NKU last year they raised the cost of tuition to build a new lake on campus. Sure the lake looks nice but was it worth increasing the cost of tuition? No.

 

I do not pay for my school, thankfully. However, I feel for students that do. I work a lot but it does not go towards school. I enjoy working and thats why I do it, and a lot of my friends are the same way. So to say kids now days are lazy and think the government owes them something is not only harsh but wrong as well.
