If BGP is any indication of the fan support that HCHS is going to receive then every Harlan County home game should be sell out. There is a new, vocal, Bear fan popping up every three days it seems!

I am as big a Breathitt fan as the next guy, but do not kid yourself. This team will be a handfull just on sure numbers. They willl probably dress 2 times or more the kids that we do. Then add in the fact that the game is on the road and probably the game they have circled for the entire year and it could spell trouble. I still think Breathitt probably has the better team, but I would not be surprised to see them lose this game.

Seems that Breathitt and Harlan may be 1 & 2 by the voices here, but Fleming 4th and Estill 3rd?

 

Breathitt has a good progam and puts in the work to be #1. Harlan is a 5A school in numbers with at least 33 starters from the three schools. Playing smaller schools, they should give even Breathitt a good game (just in numbers of players, with a coach like Larkey!)

 

BUT, do not count out Estill & Fleming. Both programs fight hard and do not give up. One or both of those teams could beat the top two.

 

I'm glad to see the support and excitment for our district. It is a real boost for all of our teams. In Estill County we hope that the other "Big 2 " programs worry about each other so that they overlook us. You know what:banana::banana: say about any given Friday night. We play these games and some people on here put way too much confidence in a 16 and 17 year old kid. Sometimes pressure turns to confidence and sometime it turns to panic. I think that we have a district to be proud of and should support the other teams when they are not playing a district foe

I agree. I'm as excited about this football season getting started as I have been in a long time.

I'm with Odessa, there is a reason they play the game, To see who the better team is! This will be Harlan County's first home game ever so emotions will be high and the team and fans will be ready to go. It will make it even more special to be playing such a High Caliber team. It will be (I think) their fourth game so Coach Larkey should have all of the kinks worked out by then. So you better pay attention to what Odessa's saying because there's always a chance that the Bears might just put you through the place where snowballs have no chance. It should be a great game!

 

What are the details with Harlan now? Which schools combined, etc.? If I'm not mistaken, some of the teams that now comprise Harlan Central (or whatever it's called) have fielded some pretty solid teams throughout the years.

 

I think it's a bit of an unknown how good they'll be in their first season, but they have the foundation to be a pretty good team and program.

 

I'm expecting Breathitt County to have a pretty strong team for the next couple of years, so I don't think Harlan will beat them. However, I'm not underestimating them. Breathitt County has some questions to answer with new players in key roles (like QB)...Harlan won't be a pushover, IMO.

Harlan County High School is made up of Evarts, Cumberland and Cawood.

 

Yes, through the years there have been some very good teams and players to play in this county and there are good players still here.

 

I am very excited to see this team play. It will be weird at the first game trying to learn new names and being a part of a "County" thing.

 

This will be a very good district. Breathitt would have to be considered the big favorite at this point.

 

I do hate that the Black Bears have only three scheduled home games.

Harlan Independent still has a team. JB Donahue is still the coach.

Two seperate.

 

Harlan Ind. is the city school, they are Ind. and did not merge with Evarts, Cumberland and Cawood to form Harlan County School.

This is a very interesting district, Breathitt County is the pre-season favorite simply because most of us don't know what to expect from Harlan County, although it wouldn't surprise me if Harlan County come out and knocked off Breathitt County in the playoffs. Estill returns most of their team including a very powerful backfield, I also heard that Fleming County returns majority of their team so things could shake up a lot in this district.

How will this district shape up? These are my preseason picks.

 

1. Breathitt Co.

2. Estill Co.

3. Harlan Co.(close 3rd with Fleming)

4. Fleming Co.

Look for the Bears to make a run and come away with two big home wins against Breathitt Co. and Estill Co.

I wouldnt count Fleming out just yet
