It's far from plain as day. The batter doesn't react like he has been hit at all, and someone would have noticed it hit the helmet and stood up for the catcher by now. I just dont see how you can say that it clearly hits his helmet.

Just that the ball spins differently, shoots off in a different direction, and thuds. Nothing too convincing though :thumb:

If it was convincing, I wouldnt be the only one saying that the ball didn't hit the helmet. The only thud there is, is when the ball hits the umpire. I've watched the video a good 50 times trying to hear another sound and have yet to hear it.

I also think the ump is making too big a deal out of this. I am sure he has been hit harder by foul balls than he did this glancing pitch off the batters helmet.

I agree with that 100%. Umpires get hit all the time by foul balls and they are just as hard as this was. He's just angry at the catcher, as he should be.

No way that hit the helmet or the batter is stupid. He makes no movement to first base like he was just hit in the head with a pitch.

 

Those who think it hit the helmet are saying that the batter got hit in the HEAD and then all he does is tell the runner to advance while not moving to first himself???????????????? Come on.

The catcher was offered to "walk-on" at the college...not a scholly. But even still, a college caliber (and any HS caliber) catcher worth their salt would NOT have reacted that way to ANY pitching situation. I think the catcher is guilty...not sure about the pitcher. And if the batter got "nicked"...he would have been contesting the call,as well. JMHO

Go to Youtube and find the video. It shows in slow motion and its a called curveball that the catcher intentionally dropped down too far on purpose. He was dropping down to block the ball before the ball was halfway to the plate. The pitcher IMO was informed because i dont know of many pitchers that throw a curveball at the face of the Umpire.

I umpire in the same association as Jeff Scott (the umpire that is hit). The ball does NOT hit the batter. The pitcher's brother - Ethan Martin - was rung up on a 3rd strike call in the half inning prior to this incident. He mouthed off as he returned to the dugout and threw his helmet (Yes, he should've been ejected for that). Anyway, after an investigation the GHSA fined the school $1,000 and placed them on "severe warning status".

 

The catcher was a horrible actor in this incident.

Seems like a pretty harsh penalty. I'm not sure what fining the school $1,000 will do either?

 

The umpire did not seem to be injured either. I realize that he said he was injured in the interview after the game, but I have a hard time believing that. Shaken up? Probably. But not injured.

 

I've heard a lot about this (hitting the umpire) but have never seen it done.

Sounds like we need the Warren commission to see about a second pitcher from the grassy knoll. Why did the catcher duck down and make no attempt to stop the ball? What if the ball hit him in the throat and he died? Catcher got what he deserved and should have to do some service. If the pitcher showed the kind of control to hit the facemask they might have done better. I don't know if he did it on purpose, and I hope they keep asking questions.

I saw the ump in the LSU / Irvine game today take a shot off the mask from a foul tip and he stayed right there and just shook his head. I think this umpire must have a chip on his shoulder as well as the ball in his mask.
