Here is a link to a video, where a Catcher at a high school in Georgia, "intentionally" misses the ball and allows the Umpire to get struck in the mask. As a result, he lost the opportunity to play College Baseball, for Gordon College.

Did you read the article? This was a High School championship game. The kid already had a scholarship from a college but the college withdrew it because of this incident.

I don't blame them for pulling it.

It appears obvious that he ducked, but to cost him his college education is a bit harsh, isn't it? I don't think the pitcher reacted any way, although he threw a pitch right at the ump's face. I can understand what the college did, but that's still a little harsh if you ask me.

From the video, it looks like the pitcher was surprised that it hit the umpire. It would be a lot more telling if we could see his face. But this is one of the more bush league things that I have ever seen and the catcher deserved what he got.

After review, I think the catcher is 100% innocent. It appears to me that the ball hits the batter's helmet and the catcher is ducking out of the way because there's no way of knowing where the ball is going to go.

You should watch the video again. If someone gets hit with a fastball in the helmet, you'll see some sort of reaction and you don't see that.

I have watched it 5 times and it clearly hits the batter's helmet.

Turn your computer's sound up loud and you can hear it hit the helmet.

Actually, I agree. I don't think there is any way the ball goes from the angle it was at to hitting the umpires face without hitting his helmet.

There wouldn't be such a big deal about this if it had hit the batter first. It would have been a dead ball and the runner wouldn't have been able to advance. You can clearly see the catcher start to reach up and then pretend to block a pitch in the dirt.

Watch it again and watch the slow motion part of the video. The helmet moves as if it were struck with the ball. Also, why would they intentionally throw a wild pitch in the title game with a runner on second?
