He wants to tax those he considers rich at a higher level (and that always ends up costing everyone) to redistribute that wealth to those he considers poor.

He wants to nationalize health care.

He wants more government control of private indistries.

Yep, sounds like a socialist to me.

Sounds like a socialist to me too. And Hillary is in the same league of thinking.

You know, the Democrats had the presidency for the taking, but they have the wrong two people as their candidates. I'm not crazy about McCain either, but I believe he will be our next president. His choice as a VP running-mate, however, will be important.

I thought this thread was about Obama? But to answer your question, there are many things that I do not agree with president Bush on, however, he is definitely not a socialist.

You are right, he's much worse than a socialist.

So what is Hugo Chavez, a super-ultra-to the fiftieth power socialist?

But let's play along with your apparent definition of a socialist. Based on your description we could call anyone from Adam Smith to George Bush a socialist.

We will not go to bed one night and wake up the next morning to find that we suddenly live in a socialist state. Socialism is like a contagious disease with a long incubation period. By the time that symptoms begin appearing, the disease has already spread to many unsuspecting victims.

Obama has attacked our economic system relentlessly on the campaign trail. In a recent commencement speech, he railed against the "money culture" and discouraged graduates from going to work for corporations.

You may disagree on whether Obama is a full fledged socialist or not, but he is clearly not much of an advocate of the free market. When candidates start talking of punishing corporations that have not been found to have done anything wrong and speak in terms of having the federal government determining what a fair profit is, IMO, the candidate is greasing the skids toward socialism.

He is preaching the, "Don't do what my wife did, so I can funnel money to that corporation and her pockets" speech

What are you basing that on? A shift to socialism is can be - and often is - rapid and often the result of intense, fervent public outcry after a disastrous economic collapse. Look at post-World War I Europe, the Great Depression, the Bolshevik Revolution and slews of other examples in much smaller countries.

There are other examples where societies simply drifted toward socialism. There was no socialist revolution in the UK, but Margaret Thatcher still found entire industries to privatize. With an economy as big and productive as ours, an incremental approach to socialism seems much more likely than a sudden, violent revolution.

To argue that a socialist must advocate an immediate nationalization of industries, as some have, is simply wrong.

Obama's rhetoric sounds a lot like the rhetoric of a socialist and he has been endorsed by socialist groups throughout his political career.

Obama's talk of a collective salvation and his attacks on some of the largest employers in this country are very troubling to those of us who believe that personal liberty and economic freedom are what has made this country great.

If Obama isn't a socialist or at least a person with definate socialist leanings how would his supporters describe him?
At least one of them describes him as a moderate - but he has not voted yet nor has he presented his case for Obama the moderate.

I am glad to see that most members seem to agree that Obama is a liberal and McCain is a moderate. People should know where a candidate stands on issues when they vote, regardless of how they vote.

Who do you think those dumb Democrats should have nominated, Prof?
