I wasn't hammering Patterson as much as I was hammering Dusty's usage and handling of him. I like Patterson and would like to see him have some success in the majors.

Seriously, it looks like the Reds are on the verge of putting together a good team. They are very young and I think Dusty Baker is good enough to manage these guys into the playoffs in the future.

Well making Corey Patterson the everyday CF is one I'll throw out there.

Dusty Baker said Corey Patterson came to him yesterday and volunteered to go Triple-A.

 

"It was a mutual decision," Baker said. "I was going to call Corey in and talk to him. He came in before I called him in. He said, 'I got to get my act together. I've got to change some things.' He knows he's better than he played. He's still got the skill, the talent. He's still only 28 years old. It's a good move to go down, stay a while and get his stuff together."

 

It sounds like there's mechanical problems with Patterson's swing. "No. 1, he's got to get on that fastball and eliminate some steps. Basically, hitting is like a two-step process. He had a third and fourth step in there."

 

Says a lot about Patterson. Unfortunately one of those things is that he played so bad even he noticed it...

Like it or not, that game is a part of it.

 

Hitting Corey Patterson at the top of the lineup is a big one. Dusty hit Patterson and Neifi Perez at the top of the order for most of the first half of the 2005 season, even though they were the absolute worst on-base guys on the team.

 

Leaving Volquez in long enough to throw 118 pitches in a game the Reds led 9-0 was another. Dusty has pushed pitchers awfully hard before, with dubious results.

 

And I suspect one of the primary reasons that Jay Bruce wasn't called up until this week had something to with his preference for "proven veteran" players.

I figured this would happen sooner or later.
