May 25, 200818 yr While he does need more time to prove himself, I'd take Brian Kelly over Grobe, Schiano and Leavitt... Thats not biased. :sssh:, he may very well could be though, he has turned UC around in just one year, I wonder how he will do when he gets his players through recruiting.
May 25, 200818 yr What I gather from the posts and reviewing the list is that the top 7 are fairly agreed upon, perhaps opinions differ on their order. After 7 though, there is a pretty good debate. Personally, Schiano and Rodriguez would have to top the best of the rest after the first 7 and would be the most debatable to be in the top 7. I would agree with Spurrier, Saban and Petrino in the next tier and had they not left college, they could be top 5. Interestingly, there are some big names and schools (Weis-ND, Paterno-PSU, Bowden-FSU) that are no longer even mentioned.
May 25, 200818 yr I do not see how Phil Fulmer is left off that list, he only has the highest winning percentage of any active coach. Exactly, Fulmer is a great coach and has proved it repeatedly, his winning percentage is 77%, with a record of 147-45, over a 16 year period.
May 26, 200818 yr Per Rivals 10. Mack Brown (Texas) 9. Tommy Tuberville (Auburn) 8. Jim Grobe (Wake Forest) 7. Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech) 6. Mark Richt (Georgia) 5. Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) 4. Les Miles (LSU) 3. Urban Meyer (Florida) 2. Jim Tressel (Ohio State) 1. Pete Carroll (Southern California) What say you? Good list? Glaring omissions *Steve Spurrier, cough, cough*? Actually I believe that you have a very good list here 5wide, I wouls make only a couple of changes........... 1. Jim Tressel (OSU), (Tressel has 6 NC to his resume and I believe 3 other appearances in a NC game, this is at 1AA YSU and now with OSU....then man can flat out coach and win) 2. P. Caroll (USC), (as bad as I hate to even mention his name ............Arrrrrrrrgh!) 3. U. Meyer (Fla.), ( has gotten the job done everywhere that he has been) 3. M. Brown (Texas), (year in and year out this guy consistently produces) 4. M. Richt (UGA) 5. F. Beamer (Va. Tech) (imo one of the best special teams and defensive coaches anywhere) 6. T. Tubberville (Auburn) 7. B. Stoops (OU) 8. P. Fulmer (UT) ( I personally question whether he should make my list but his record speaks volumes, it is great. Just imo he is one of if not the best recruiter bc he has done less with the most talent for years (loaded every year and with the talent he has had imo he could have won multiple NC's), and besides that he is a jerk lol) 9. Tie......L. Miles (LSU), J. Grobe (WFU), ( I certainly agee with you 5wide in that he should be on this list) 10. At this spot I will put I will put a man that imo should never be left off of any list anywhere when talking about college coaches and that is...........................Joe Paterno, (Penn State) :ylsuper: Also, although his teams have been down the last few years Bobby Bowden deseves mention along with S. Spurrier , jmo. Saban imo will be back on this list in a very short time, just that he left for the NFL, he can flat out coach football though and imo will have Bama back in the NC picture very soon. As for Petrino, I just can't see him mentoned in any group of "best coaches" anywhere. Edited May 26, 200818 yr by oldrambler
May 26, 200818 yr Some say that Greg Schiano will be the next Penn St coach... He very well could be and I hope that he is. Schiano is another one that could easily be on my list above, Rutgers was NOTHING untill he got there. After he arrived, the people around there actually realized that their school had a football team and then to take it to and beat the best in the big east speaks all that needs to be said about Schiano.
May 26, 200818 yr With Bobby Petrino back in college, you have to think he belongs on this list ahead of Jim Grobe. Uh......No I wouldn't and I don't.
May 26, 200818 yr Bowden and Paterno have to be at least 2 of the top 3 you can't judge the top ten coaches today just on last year.

May 26, 200818 yr Spurrrier hasn't been overly impressive since coming back to the college ranks. Now if you want to count his run at Florida I would have to agree. So, Spurrier isn't a good coach now? Did he forget x's and o's? I don't understand.
May 26, 200818 yr Petrino? You guys are nuts. List is more than a little off. No Paterno, Bowden, Surrier, or Fulmer?
May 26, 200818 yr Bowden and Paterno don't deserve to be on this list. If it was a list of all time best coaches, yes, but not now. They are both way past their prime, I don't think I've seen either one of them wearing a headset in the last few years.

May 27, 200818 yr Author Actually I believe that you have a very good list here 5wide, I wouls make only a couple of changes........... Not my list...the list I posted was from the Rivals web site. No way Jim Grobe would be on my list...I may try to come up with one though. I'll have to think a little about it.
