May 19, 200818 yr Al Gore has made anti-global warming action a palpable threat to our way of life. The global climate is a legitimate area of scientific research. Al Gore is not a scientist and he was not even a good science student. Gore's attempt to stifle scientific debate by ridiculing scientists and others who disagree with him should alarm everybody. In fact, Gore's tactics have been criticized by some scientists who are convinced that man is contributing to global warming. Many of those scientists believe that Gore has overstated the strength of the case for global warming and worry about a backlash when his dire scenarios do not materialize. Every public policy initiative should be subjected to an honest benefit to costs analysis and those of us who are not convinced that global warming is occurring or believe that it is occurring but that man's contribution to it are minimal, do not believe that enough attention is being paid to the cost side of the analysis. For those who think that I am attacking Al Gore because he is a liberal Democrat, let me say that John McCain's position on global warming is even more troubling to me. McCain or Obama will be in position to set Gore's costly plans into action. I have no idea whether Obama believes in the man-made global warming theory or not, but I suspect McCain is simply looking at whether the position will help him with moderates in November. I am also troubled by Newt Gingrich's flip-flop on this issue, but Gingrich will not be in position to sign bills and he does not have hundreds of millions of dollars to influence policy. I'm not passionate about this issue either way, and I don't consider Al Gore a hero, but the lengths to which Gore's opponents will go to ridicule him on this issue is reflective of the right wing's approach to all of those on the other side. The concept of global warming, as I understand it, is generally accepted in the scientific community, although there is healthy debate on the subject in some quarters. I love how you dismiss Newt Gingrich's view on the issue as a flip-flop ... perhaps he weighed the evidence and decided to come down on the same side of the issue as Al Gore. After all, that's the same way many of us arrive at a position on issues instead of simply lashing out at those we don't like or agree with.
May 19, 200818 yr The concept of global warming, as I understand it, is generally accepted in the scientific community, although there is healthy debate on the subject in some quarters. I believe that Aces' biggest concern (and one of mine as well) is that Al Gore tries to portray the situation as NO DEBATE WHATSOEVER on the subject by scientists, and that it is just accepted by all. I find that disturbing.

I find that disturbing. How is that different than the approach both sides take to a whole host of issues? And, simply going from what I've seen, the majority of the scientific community is with Gore on the issue. Hasn't even the President admitted that global warming is a real concern?

Hasn't even the President admitted that global warming is a real concern? Correct me if I am wrong, but you are saying that since most people take that approach, it is OK? If you think I am just accusing Gore of this, absolutely not. Still doesn't make it right. FWIW, people on here post everyday signs that global warming is real and that it is not real, that it is man-made and that it is natural, etc. I am not saying ignore it completely- research needs to be done. But A) Guys like Gore shouldn't be too credible on this argument because of his inclination to say there is "no debate" and his investments in eco-friendly firms (IMO he is too involved) and B) We shouldn't jump to rash decisions that are incredibly harmful to the state of society because of an idea that is not really settled yet.
May 19, 200818 yr I think that if I had been Uncle Al, I'd have turned down the Nobel Peace Prize. I'd have kept the money, but the Peace Prize would have gone to a more deserving person. This really hurt my confidence in and respect for the Nobel selection committee.
May 19, 200818 yr Author I'm not passionate about this issue either way, and I don't consider Al Gore a hero, but the lengths to which Gore's opponents will go to ridicule him on this issue is reflective of the right wing's approach to all of those on the other side. After all, that's the same way many of us arrive at a position on issues instead of simply lashing out at those we don't like or agree with. I am going to go out on a limb here and hazard a guess that you have not listen to Newt Gingrich speak much about his strategy of regaining Republican seats in Congress. I have heard him debate this issue with several other conservatives and he seems more interested in polishing the Republican brand than saving the planet. You may be right, and maybe you are better versed in Newt's political beliefs and world view than I am, but IMO, Gingrich, Bush, and McCain have adopted their positions on global warming because the polls have told them to do so. Gingrich, Bush, and McCain are no more scientists than Al Gore is. I have spent considerable time studying this issue and paid attention to how the media is reporting it. There is far less consensus among scientists than we are being led to believe - hence, a $300 million ad campaign to help cut off the debate. How many people are aware that there was no global warming from 1998 through 2007? How many people realize that the world's oceans have cooled for the past five years - the timeframe during which detailed measurements have been collected? How many people read about the temperature corrections that NASA made a few months ago that discredited Al Gore's hockey stick graph and showed that the hottest years of the last century occurred during the Great Depression? Al Gore and his media friends are presenting an extremely biased view of global warming research to the American people. I believe that this is being done for financial and political gain. I do realize that there are many people who genuinely believe in the man-made global warming theory and I have much more respect for them than I do the political opportunists who are jumping on the bandwagon because it is the popular thing to do and to avoid being ridiculed as a flat-earther.
May 19, 200818 yr Correct me if I am wrong, but you are saying that since most people take that approach, it is OK?No ... just saying that many are criticizing Gore for an approach that isn't uncommon these days.
May 19, 200818 yr Sparky, I'm sure the Nobel Committee and a good majority of Americans would consier Mr. Gore more of a hero than the war-mongering Bush. Dude, you are freakin' me out man. Your name implies a mathematical background, but talk about some fuzzy math. I've never partied with oldrambler, but I have read a lot of his post, hero may be a stretch but he seems like a cool dude to me. As for Mr. Gore, he is definitely to up tight for me, I am a laid back kind of guy, and he creeps me out with all of his "The World's Coming to an End" and "Apocalypse Now" propaganda, it's a bummer man. And I just can't see where he is coming from. All of his "Global Warming" stuff, if your globe gets to warm, just add some water, it will cool down.

I have spent considerable time studying this issue and paid attention to how the media is reporting it.Given your political bent, I can only imagine where you got your information ... Al Gore and his media friends are presenting an extremely biased view of global warming research to the American people. I believe that this is being done for financial and political gain. You seem to believe that of every position taken by some on the left ... Bottom line ... you're just as biased on the issue as those you criticize whenever you get the opportunity.
May 19, 200818 yr If you care to take the time and do some even moderate research, you'll find that the global warming myth is poo-poo'd by the overwhelming majority of scientists. Really, do the research. And look for credible mainstream scientific research material. So the "most scientists still agree with the global warming concept" is hogwash.

Dude, it's like your smart or something. I have always found that it is a good idea to listen to smart people. Kinda like those scientists you are talking about, I was watching this smart show on TV one night, and it was talking about there were like a small amount of scientists who agreed that global warming was happening, but there were like a whole big bunch of other scientists who said it was not happening. Now, I am no scientists, but I think if that many scientists say that little bitty number of scientists are wrong, then I have to go with the bigger group. Oh, and I almost forgot, I also read where a group of scientist who specialize in studying the rain forest said that the globe was cooling. Now, that is freaky man, because they said they were worried about the rain forest because the globe was cooling and was going to cool the rain forest to much.

May 19, 200818 yr I wipe former VP Al Gore from the slate. Global warming has been a concern in the scientific community since at least the 1980s. I did NOT see any anti-global warming advocates UNTIL Gore announced it as a...platform (?). Was I just not looking in the right places? Al Gore has made anti-global warming action a palpable threat to our way of life. The global climate is a legitimate area of scientific research.
