New Field Surfaces

Featured Replies

I stopped out to Simon Kenton yesterday and caught up with Coach Marksberry. The Pioneer field is being replaced with the synthetic turf. Although he said that it looks like they are just moving dirt piles, he assures me that the new surface will be done in time for the season.

Other than Ryle, who else will have a new surface for this next year?? Any pictures??

East Carter will be laying down a bluegrass sod surface on their gamefield. The Carter County Board of Education took a big step in approving almost $40,000 in improvements for the gamefield. Along with the sod, the gamefield will also be re-crowned and an irrigation system will be installed. The practice field has also gotten a face lift to alleviate heavy use of the gamefield for practice needs.

So Ryle is also getting turf?

That's great to hear Buttels. I'm sure the Pioneers will love it.

What has Letcher County Central decided on as a field surface for their new park?

There was an article in the paper about a month ago that they got a $750,000 donation for the turf.

I drove by this past weekend and noticed the track was gone and piles of dirt everywhere. I was wondering what was going on. I had no clue they were getting turf this year.

Did Simon Kenton do any special fundraising for their field?

Will SK be adding a regulation size track, and will the keep the track outside the fence?

You would think Holmes would be next, two teams play home games there.[/QUOT

I don't think that is anywhere on the radar for the Covington School District. There are far more serious issues and programs to which they need to allocate resources. Unfortunately, sports facility improvements will not increase revenue or enrollment at the school and it is very difficult to get enough kids to commit to the rigors of football. So, it would be hard to justify the expense. I have had a lot of exposure to Holmes and there are great teachers, administrators and kids there, but a new football surface will do nothing to address the serious issues with which they must contend day in and day out. Maybe I am wrong...I hope I am, but I don't think so.

I know field turf is the latest rage and offers loads of flexibility. I'm hearing about injury issues and long term maintenance issues with the field turf. Are these real issues or just justification to not spend the $3/4 million?

Not clear about the injuries, I'm hearing they are "studying" a possible connection. Long term maintenance will be a big deal if a school needs to raise funds every 10-15 years to rebuild or rehab the field.

This interest me as my daughter just injured herself last week on a turf field, tearing her Lateral Collateral Ligament on Assumptions turf field. She just scored (lacrosse) and planted her foot to change directions in order to stay out of the crease, then pop. I assume it was just a freak thing at this point, however the doctor did say that is an unusuall ligament to injure. The bright side is that it heal quicker than the ACL or MCL. If ya gotta pick one of the three...:thumb: It is a rubberized surface (turf turds) so you think it has a lot of give, but maybe turf still doesn't give as much as natural grass does. It is slick though, due to the length of the fake grass blades.

I have heard from several folks that Staph infection is a growing concern with these fields.

Just another reason for me to never like the stuff. You can never get me to like turf fields no matter what.
