April 29, 200818 yr I concur with the previous post about Miller...there is no way Miller would have been at UK with OTS as coach. One thing with recruiting the elite kids, particularly post players, unless you have one right in your hometown, you really have to establish contact and maintain it roughly from their freshman or at least their sophomore years. BCG has really only just begun that. You can see some early returns with the verbals he has in the future classes. He has also been handtied to an extent by an unbalanced roster...it is hit or miss many times with kids in the spring in which you are scrambling. I have nothing but positive things to say about BCG and his recruiting...they had more underclassman on campus the last calendar year for unofficials than OTS probably did in his last five. So you don't think Miller would be at UK if not for BCG?
April 29, 200818 yr So you don't think Miller would be at UK if not for BCG? Fair or unfair, I do not think Tubby has the greatest rep in Mason County for passing up on a previous recruit.

April 29, 200818 yr He did recruit last season and this season, right? This years class will soon be done and carry into BG 2nd season as coach, his 3rd class will before 3rd season of coaching and so on and so on He recruited less than a month before the spring signing period and got 2 top 50 players, of course Legion did not work out. By them probably 80% of the good players had already signed or committed. I think he deserves some more leadway. I like Tubby Smith ver well, but he was simply not a great recruier. More than anyhing he had assistants that were poor recruiters. Gillispie has done a GREAT job recruiting for the 2007 class he helped finish up and has done a decent job with the 08 class.

I agree he has had more on campus but he is not signing them. Would think that the UK name would account at least 60 percent of recruiting, I mean this isn't Texas A&M. If he loses Fleming,Pattilo,Majok,Kecman,Harrelson,McCoy,Sutton,Hopson this season on top of Sanchez,Lucas,Hamba and know I'm forgetting some from last season(Legion,I guess), except for Hopson, these guys should be honored to play for UK because they are not what you would call McDonald's all americans
April 29, 200818 yr I thought kids came to play at UK, but this makes it sound that the coach is bigger than the program. Maybe not bigger than the program, but certainly a big part of it.
April 29, 200818 yr Author So you don't think Miller would be at UK if not for BCG? I think the assistant coach(forget his name) they got from Illinois sealed the deal fro Miller
April 29, 200818 yr Is it Galloway? Tubby, I believe started the ball rolling with Patterson and Miller, don't know about Liggins. Does anyone know for sure(not counting verbals) if Galloway and maybe Liggings were recruited from start to finish by Billy G only? He's working it very hard though........................

He didn't get the ball rolling with Patterson or Miller, but signed them, but he doesn't get the credit. As I said getting the ball rolling and signing are entirely different things.
April 29, 200818 yr I think the assistant coach(forget his name) they got from Illinois sealed the deal fro Miller Probably true. What are the odds Miller and Webster is at UK though if Tubby is still there? Miller would be headed to Illinois or wherever Webster may have been right now.
April 29, 200818 yr I thought kids came to play at UK, but this makes it sound that the coach is bigger than the program. You know as much as I know that the coach is a big part of why kids go to a certain school. Let's all be real here.
April 29, 200818 yr He did recruit last season and this season, right? This years class will soon be done and carry into BG 2nd season as coach, his 3rd class will before 3rd season of coaching and so on and so on He recruited LATE last year. He was already committed to half of the class he brought in anyway by what Tubby had committed already. One in AJ Stewart, the other is the garbage that was Mike Williams (I mean that in the nicest way possible). I would hardly say he got two full classes. I dont think you really understand how recruiting works.
April 29, 200818 yr I agree he has had more on campus but he is not signing them. Would think that the UK name would account at least 60 percent of recruiting, I mean this isn't Texas A&M. BCG cuts ties, a few hours later he inks with Hawaii. Pattilo was a spring attempt...long had been recruited by Oklahoma.. Mojak was a longshot from the get go, but gave it a heck of a ride. Kecman, again a spring attempt. Harrellson a spring attempt but have monitored him for a while...if they lose him it will be a blow. Hopson never visited UK under BCG and they got in late with him. OTS is the one who butchered that whole deal. Screwed up his visit during junior year after not even recruiting him his entire sophomore year...tell me, how can an assistant at Texas be in on Hopson before OTS during a kid's sophomore year? McCoydoesn't have a confirmed offer. Sutton will come to UK if they offer. Sanchez, staed close to home, whole family including siblings is at Arkansas Lucas he really tried to get but lost out to Florida. Hamba, who knows how all of that went down. All I know is he outworked people for Miller, surprised many and nabbed Liggins who most had inked for Kansas. Has gotten big time verbal from Ross-Miller, got Euton, Viliriano, and may get a verbal from a 2011 kid who many project will be a four/five star big man in Vinny Zollo who is in Thad Matta's backyard. You can really start looking at the 09 class as real barometers of his success or lacketherof...because of time to establish relationships and so forth. I have no real complaints at the moment. It is a far cry from what we were used to over the last few years under OTS.
April 29, 200818 yr I think the assistant coach(forget his name) they got from Illinois sealed the deal fro Miller Possibly true, but the bottom line is, BCG worked at it...took advantage of an open position on his staff...made it work...shows willingness to make it work with assistant coaches. OTS assistants were dogs and he was not willing to change it. One example...OTS and staff were at a major AAU event...tall skinny kid is just killing, junior and senior to be. OTS asks who this kid was..asks Rigot, didn't know, who asks Hanson who doesn't know...Hanson has to borrow a program and find out who the kid was. Who was the kid? Kevin Durant. How could you possibly not know who Kevin Durant was as an underclassman? Easy...you didn't work at it. Don't believe the story? The story was told by a writer who covers recruiting for a newspaper, and he was sitting behind UK staff at the event.
April 29, 200818 yr I do hope that Vilarino decommits. I hear he is not very good. We could use that scholarship else where.
