In the other case, a president has pursued a foreign policy that had broad bipartisan support until liberal Democrats decided to undermine the war effort for political gain.

As for the second ... well, that's a nice right-wing talking-point way to look at it. Just maybe support for the war was lost because the American people realized the reasons they were given for going to Iraq were wrong ... and that they may have even been misled.

Your vitriolic response pretty much sums up how some are so extreme in their passion that they can't see any possible mistake by those they support.

 

It's comical in that you can turn the names around and see this same response from Democrats who bashed the Republicans that criticized Bill Clinton at every turn. Only then it was the Dems backlash versus the GOP's condemnations.

 

Mistakes are made in all wars. When they disbanded the Iraqi Army I wondered why they did that, because in WWII we used our former enemies in some situations to help us maintain order. Just because you make mistakes does not mean you turn tail and run. You adapt and overcome.

Period. At that time, a majority of Americans believed (incorrectly) that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11. The White House knew better, but chose to perpetuate this false connection. Contrast that to today, now that the public has seen how the administration manipulated the situation and then incompetently managed the outcome, 63% of Americans surveyed say starting this war was a mistake.

 

The only thing undermining this war is its own illegitimacy.

Most Democrats in Congress who authorized using force in Iraq did not even bother reading the resolution authorizing the war. Yet now the same people who were too busy to read intelligence reports say that the intelligence was slanted.

 

The resolutions authorizing force did not link Iraq to 9/11 but did correctly link Iraq to terrorism. Saddam was seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Saddam did seek yellow cake uranium from Niger (the Niger government rejected the request). Saddam did violate UN resolutions repeatedly and he did bribe the Russians, French, and Germans to circumvent the economic sanctions that were in place, and he was a large scale mass murderer.

 

Many Americans oppose the war now in large part because of the effective propaganda campaign that Congressional Democrats have been engaging in to win elections. Never in American history has one political party so actively undermined American foreign policy with so many troops in harm's way.

 

George Soros has bought himself a party and now we shall see if he can buy himself a president as well.
