April 24, 200818 yr So what game was this? The runners foot was on the bag, and the ball was 10 feet away from the guy playing 1st.
April 24, 200818 yr Previously umpired in the New York Penn League (1992-93), South Atlantic League (1994), Carolina League (1995), Texas League (1996-97) and International League (1998-2003). http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/umpires/bio.jsp?id=3056 He may have to go back to the Penn League for a refresher course. You'd think and ump with close to 20 years of experience would be able to get the timing on that play. I could have called that one.
April 24, 200818 yr The announcers were like, "and not in time, OHHHH!!!" That was the best part, because it was so routine and so obvious he was safe. They had already moved on.
April 24, 200818 yr ^ It's funny that the crew chief didn't overturn the ruling on the field. You know everyone else in the stadium knew he was safe.
April 24, 200818 yr I had to go back and watch it again so I could laugh about it. "Chico...not in time...OH MY!!! OHHH!!! Wow! Oh man!...That wasn't even close and he even had to think about it!"
April 24, 200818 yr ^ It's funny that the crew chief didn't overturn the ruling on the field. You know everyone else in the stadium knew he was safe. I too think it was a horrible call but I don't think the crew chief could overturn it because once the runner left the first base area and went into the dugout, he's automatically out.
April 24, 200818 yr Hey - NOTHING comes close to Denkinger's call! :irked: (yes, I am a Cardinals fan; and I STILL get ticked off thinking about the '85 Series) I am in total agreement with you on that.
April 24, 200818 yr Wow. Question. When something this bad happens, what is the penalty for the umpire?
April 24, 200818 yr Wow. Question. When something this bad happens, what is the penalty for the umpire? I guess one penalty is that he discussed all around the nation and laughed at.:ylsuper:
April 24, 200818 yr I wasn't around (like alive) for the Denkinger call, but I looked it up and saw a screen shot. While obviously the repercussions were not on as large of a scale, this seems to be much worse in terms of just missing it.
April 24, 200818 yr I guess one penalty is that he discussed all around the nation and laughed at.:ylsuper: I think they should have to participate in the aftergame pressers. Now that would be fun:D
April 24, 200818 yr I think they should have to participate in the aftergame pressers. Now that would be fun:D Agreed! :thumb: Actually, I just want to know that he (Denkinger) got his butt chewed by someone in authority above him, and have some kind of accountability.
April 24, 200818 yr Agreed! :thumb: Actually, I just want to know that he (Denkinger) got his butt chewed by someone in authority above him, and have some kind of accountability. From what I read, the Commissioner was in the Umpire's locker room after that game.
