If this is the argument, I wouldn't have much of a problem with it. Just another thing to put on my to do list.

 

If the reason is that I should be tested because some 14-year old is tested, well that is not a good reason.

 

That reason is actually for what STUDENTS to test really. Like, I have a big problem of testing athletes and student drivers ONLY. I feel that the majority of people actually using drugs don't fall into those categories. Actually at the school we have several people turn in their Parking Pass to the school and they don't play sports. I wonder what that hints.

My point is that education dollars are tight. Most districts are cutting teachers this year. I would rather see these funds being spent on teachers rather than specimen cups. Especially, since it is going to not result in many if any failed tests.

 

Operating budgets are tough in all business sectors ( except maybe oil). I think striving to provide a drug free workplace would be paramount to our educators.

Other than the fact they teach, coach, mentor, feed, and help prepare our youth for the next steps in their lives. Don't see a reason? Wow. People in pretty much every walk in life are subjected to drug testing. I am real suprised by your response.

 

All of those jobs doesn't have as much influence on teens and young kids as teachers do. I would test teachers before any of those mentioned.

You have to take that up with the Supreme Court though as they have decided you cannot test all students since education is a right.

I think drugs from students is a bigger problem. However, as someone who works in this area, I can tell you that there are drug addicts in all walks of life. If my principal suspects one of our teachers is using, I sure as heck want him to have to power to check it out.

That is true but it is really hard to manipulate the parents in that aspect. The teachers do also play a big role and is easier to test. But I don't really feel testing the teachers is that big of an issue at this point. I am just strongly against the testing of CERTAIN students and not the whole.

Yep... you get into against the law at that point. Not really sure how this problem(IMO) can be fixed.

Happens at GRC. It's only a street over and not a bad walk at all. Easy way out for those people.

Just got back from Scott County Community Forum, Panel Members Superintendent from Nelson, SC Superintendent, Executive Director of Safe Schools (former principal of Dunbar), Owner of Prestige (?) Drug Testing Company, along with President of Scott Countians Against Drugs........Here are some interesting things that were discussed

 

1. Currently 98 School Districts in Kentucky Drug Test

2. Most school districts pay for drug testing through federal grant money (Nelson recieved 1 million over three years)

3. It costs on average 85 Dollars to do a steriod test, and about 6-24 dollars to do a general drug test (depending on quanity and how much work is subcontracted)

4. There is a new test that can test alcohol in your system up to 80 hours after consumption

5. In Nelson County if athlete tests positive they must do drug counseling and are suspended from athletics for 21 days and must take another drug test to be admitted back.

6. In the past 8 years Dunbar has only had four positive tests (this was a suprize!)

7. It was discussed to test everyone but the "average student" (which as of today cant be done for legal reasons) some people included in this;

A: Certified and Classified Staff

B: Athletes (including middle school)

C: Any student that drives to school

D: Any student that participates in extra curricular activity including band, dance team, etc..

E: School board members and Superintent

F: Athletic Coaches/Sponsors

 

 

 

Only big knock I can find is costs, if this is funded by grants my stance is "why not", I have come to the realization that this will allow students with extended responsibilites to be more aware to say "no". I think this should allow kids that take on extra responsibilites to better understand that with extended responsibilites more is expected of you as an individual. I can personally think of about 10 cases of athletes that would have already directly benifited from this in Scott County that are still today on a downward spiral of addiction that will soon lead to their demise. Just wish that it wouldnt have taken such a bad incident to spur us to act.....I think student acheivement is directly related to drug free students..........Thoughts?

As I said, if the argument is to test teachers because of providing the safe role models etc, etc, that is a fair argument.

 

If the argument is that the kids are getting tested than the teachers should to, is just ridiculous.
