I think it is a personal situation, that should be handled at home.

I don't need my kid peeing in a cup for a high school. I think I can raise my kids just fine on my own. And if I want my kids drug tested I'll take them to the doctor myself.

 

That is my personal opinion... I don't need the school intervening into my personal life.

I also think it is wrong to single out athletes, but I have already said that.

 

Like it or not some districts are also testing middle school athletes, if student refuses to take test it is treated as if the test came back positive!

I can't say too much about this because this topic generally makes my head nearly explode, but briefly:

 

"Random" drug testing without suspicion or cause is inherently wrong.

 

No real proof that it is effective, as studies supporting it have traditionally been sponsored by??? The drug testing industry, which makes something like 1.5 billion dollars a year.

 

Even the American Association\Academy of Pediatricians thinks drug testing in schools is not a good thing.

 

I thoroughly disagree with you. If drug testing can cause some students to stay away from drug use then it is worth it.

There has been multiple parents of students that dont play athletics that are "big time" against drug testing, in this editoral the lady threatens to pull her three kids out of the district, none of which play sports.

By allowing this drug-testing mandate to pass, we will be raising a generation of children that are being “groomed” into accepting the removal of their personal rights and freedoms. By saying it’s OK to test them against their will using the school system, we are in a sense, telling them that they have no rights to say “no.”

 

Yeah I found her opinion from the article a bit ridiculous. It is my understanding that it is not a right, but a privelage to play sports and to drive to school. So in order ot recieve this, students should be clean. It is not a student's personal right or freedom to use drugs, its illegal! So we should do all we can to stop it.

The woman has confused "rights" with "privelege" here.

Other than the fact they teach, coach, mentor, feed, and help prepare our youth for the next steps in their lives. Don't see a reason? Wow. People in pretty much every walk in life are subjected to drug testing. I am real suprised by your response.

 

So I guess you think that parents and siblings should be tested as well--since they would have even more influence than teachers in helping prepare them for those next steps.

 

I have no problem with teachers being tested--just not for the reasons you state as there are lots of occupations that influence children. Teachers are professionals also and should be treated as such.

 

Our system tests athletes as well as extra-curricular activities. In addition, a student must agree to random drug testing to receive a parking permit on school grounds. All students are not tested simply because there can be no consequences as you can not suspend a student unless they are under the influence at the time of suspension which is not likely when results are not in for several days. However, the other reasons for testing are activities in which a student may be excused from.
