The "Super Class" is a pipe dream ... no one is going to volunteer to compete with Trinity and St. Xavier for a state title every year.

I believe this would make it an even MORE viable option. You're not going to win it every year. T & X are winning it almost every year as it is. Nothing would change for them. But it would give some of these more advanced teams the chance to shoot for a goal that truly meant something. And occasionally, without doubt, they would achieve it.

It would be the most magical trophy in this region, that's for sure. That said, I would have the Super Class be an 8 team class. They would play "open" schedules throughout the season, as the logistics would be very difficult to do a "district" schedule. Then they ALL go to the playoff and are seeded by their LIT ratings....each game being played at the high seeds home. That way, if X or Trinity has a down year, they may play each other early on, or in the championship. Man, this is what I really want.

It just didn't make sense the way you posted it. When you quote someone, you're generally responding to that person. So, to say to them, "the person that I quoted," is a little awkward for the reader. Do you understand now?

I would do it exactly the same way, with the possibe exception of using the Lit ratings for seeding. I'd use something more reilable, such as the BGP Rankings. :thumb:

That is VERY flattering -- and I appreciate it. But I must point out that I totally disagree with football even giving out a "coach of the year" award and naming the head coach. Given all that must go into building a great season, there must be a great STAFF. As has happened for me in my previous jobs, we've been VERY fortunate to have attracted not good, but GREAT staff members (so far at Ballard, the same thing is happening; we just hired what may be the best "Defense Head Coach" -- what I call our D-Coordinators -- in the business).

 

And I see what Watusi's saying -- it took us into our 4th year at Oldham to get our first "Ky. STAFF of the year award." But we were a "nobody" to folks out in the state at the time, so the success we had there got pretty good attention. At Ballard, people will expect more of us because of the talent people know we have and the good history Mark Catlett had here.

 

But back to the topic, I proposed a similar idea (taking the top 16 in enrollment and making them a class of their own) several years ago on this board. After getting to coach in 1A and seeing the uphill struggle many of the VERY small schools in the state (not the one I coached) have to even field a team year in and year out, I would add that there needs to be a similar class at the BOTTOM. It seems to me the following would make the most sense considering the number of schools playing football in our state:

 

5A:

* the top 16 schools in enrollment

* add any under that who choose to "play up" on a 4-year commitment

* for every "play-up" school that would join, the lowest-enrollment "top-16" schools would have the choice to drop to 4A to keep the number at 16

* if one or more of these choose not to drop, there would probably have to be a computer system like is done in Ohio to determine who makes the playoffs and who doesn't (but ONLY in this class!).

 

1A:

* the bottom 16 schools in enrollment.

* I'd even say there should be the possibility of making that an all 8-man division in their playoffs.

 

2A, 3A, 4A: all the rest. But I'd divide them in a way that the percentage of disparity between the smallest and largest schools in all 3 classes are similar.

I was just looking at the current enrollment of the football playing schools in Ky...There are 212 teams...If they opted to go with a Super class of 20 teams, that would leave 48 teams in the other 4 classes...It would sure make the other 4 very competitive...Look at 1a, for example...Here's a sampling of what would be added there...

 

Russellville

Somerset

Bardstown

NCC

Middlesboro

Metcalfe Co

Murray

 

Talk about changing the landscape of things..Sure wouldn't be a 3 or 4 team race any longer...

 

Then look at the new 2a teams:

 

Belfry

Breathitt Co

Central

Russell

Henry Co

Sheldon Clark

 

2a wouldn't hurt any as they replace some quality teams with more quality teams...

 

3a would add these:

 

Lex Catholic

Boyle Co

Highlands

Bell Co

Warren East

Lone Oak

Cov Catholic

Bullitt East

Fairdale

Franklin Co

 

There's several other quality teams not mentioned...

 

4a would look alot like the current 5a with additional teams like..

 

Ryle

Meade Co

Boone Co

Marshall Co

Shelby Co

I don't think it would work to have a super (bad) class for Class A. The 8-man angle hasn't worked in the past. It would turn it into a JV tourney without any of the traditional Class A powers.

Lots of them. Most notably, all of Jefferson County.
