This position has always amazed me that people think that the CRIMINALS who now sell this junk are ALL OF A SUDDEN going to grow a conscience and pay taxes on items that they are selling presently and PAYING NO TAXES on.

First, marijuana isn’t something kids drive to street corners in downtown Cincinnati to get. “Dealers” are basically anyone who uses it, to an extent, and they are ubiquitous. It’s the growers and traffickers who disseminate it. If made legal the market would put them out of business, being that the risk wouldn’t be worth the possible profit. No one is going to risk breaking the law to get it when they could just as easily buy it legally. Not to mention the networks and sheer number of those involved in the illegal trade would drop drastically, making it easier for law enforcement to zone in on them and thus increasing the risk.

 

You know I have no clue how my cellphone works. How I speak words and they somehow invisibly travel across the country to my sister 30 minutes away. But I push the button and speak and I know it happens.

You’re using one experience versus an entire population. Not to mention you’ve reached your conclusion based on the assumption a correlation between marijuana use and this particular person’s unwillingness to be successful either exists or is valid. Marijuana use could very well be the result, not the cause, of this person’s dysfunction. For example:

 

A person spends most of their day stoned and has no desire to get a job and make something of themselves because they just want to lay around and get high. Since they don't have any income, they steal so that they can lay around and get high.

 

Would you feel that marijuana at least CONTRIBUTED to the wasting of their life?

 

How do you know that this person would be some fine, upstanding citizen and future valedictorian? I would posit that in an environment free of all “immoral obstacles,” short of putting a gun to this person’s head they would continue to lie around and leech.

 

As an illegal substance, marijuana is more widely available than the legal substances of cigarettes and alcohol. I would consider it much more difficult for a high school kid to acquire a pack of booze than marijuana. No black market exists for those legal substances. In order to get it, a kid would have to go through the highly controlled and regulated legal channels that currently do not exist in the current black market. Police can’t stop every small time transaction, which there are probably thousands a day in each area, but once those transactions are eliminated as the primary means of acquiring the substance, enforcement could be more stringently placed on the legal means. I see legalization as a pragmatic idea.

But back to topic and to address your statement I am full well aware of what went on during this time. Quite frankly I don't care. I simply was answering your question honestly. Git rid of alcohol. My personal experience is that I had a brother pass away last year directly from alcohol abuse. He drank since he was a teenager and was horrible to deal with. He gave up alcohol for about 8 year and they were the best years of his life not to mention our family's life. During those 8 years he smoked pot pretty much every day. But I could talk to him, deal with him and live with him. He fell off the wagon 5 years ago and died last year. I know from my first hand experience that being off alcohol and on pot was the best thing for him. At least I had some time with him that was worthwhile...

 

And yes there were times of being off both and they were horrendus. Some people use alcohol, pot, drugs, gambling, food, church, sex, what ever it is to allow them to function in the world. We are all messed up in our own minds so if him using pot gave him some "sanity" so that he could function, I had no issues with it. As long as he didn't hurt our family in the process.

Who cares if it is addictive? Gambling is addictive, but we do that in certain places in this country. Drinking alcohol is addictive. Drinking soda is addictive. None of those things are "good" for you. Marijuana doesn't hurt you. While it may be addictive, there are no other bad qualities...

 

Why not regulate it like cigarettes. Don't allow people to smoke it outside their homes, don't allow minors to use it, etc....

I fear that this country is going even further down the road to it's internal destruction where we are getting to the point that we want a society filled with free choices to do whatever drugs you wish, gamble and ruin your families lives, kill unborn children and the rest of us sit back and say what a great country we have.

There is a "black market" for alcohol, in dry counties though. If these counties weren't dry, there would be no bootleggers to buy from.

You think a ban on alcohol will stop people from drinking it? NO. That is my point. People will still get it, but it will be in more dangerous ways. Kids will get it, rich people will get it, poor people will get it, all because people like Al Capone are not afraid of the cops, or the law. They will kill, steal, and break any law in order to get their money. Ban alcohol and you will have people like that bootlegging alcohol all over the country again...and you will still have people getting their alcohol. Going through another prohibition would be so incredibly stupid it's hard to imagine.
