Wonder if marijuana contributed to the stupidity and laziness?

Marijuana does not cause profound changes in people's behavior.

Myth: Marijuana is Highly Addictive. Long term marijuana users experience physical dependence and withdrawal, and often need professional drug treatment to break their marijuana habits.

Fact: Most people who smoke marijuana smoke it only occasionally. A small minority of Americans - less than 1 percent - smoke marijuana on a daily basis. An even smaller minority develop a dependence on marijuana. Some people who smoke marijuana heavily and frequently stop without difficulty. Others seek help from drug treatment professionals. Marijuana does not cause physical dependence. If people experience withdrawal symptoms at all, they are remarkably mild.

Myth: Marijuana is More Damaging to the Lungs Than Tobacco. Marijuana smokers are at a high risk of developing lung cancer, bronchitis, and emphysema.

Fact: Moderate smoking of marijuana appears to pose minimal danger to the lungs. Like tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke contains a number of irritants and carcinogens. But marijuana users typically smoke much less often than tobacco smokers, and over time, inhale much less smoke. As a result, the risk of serious lung damage should be lower in marijuana smokers. There have been no reports of lung cancer related solely to marijuana, and in a large study presented to the American Thoracic Society in 2006, even heavy users of smoked marijuana were found not to have any increased risk of lung cancer. Unlike heavy tobacco smokers, heavy marijuana smokers exhibit no obstruction of the lung's small airway. That indicates that people will not develop emphysema from smoking marijuana.

I don't think so.

"Marijuana does not cause profound changes in people's behavior."

That study is flawed with my life story. I grew up with family members that did it regularly and I was offered it many, many times but never once partaked. Why? I was too scared of going to jail if I got caught.

You are one person.

It has been proved numerous times that punishments (even capital punishment) are not very good deterrents.

I don't think so.

If it does not change their behavior, why do they use it?

As I teach in class there is always more than 1 reason for an occurence. But 1 usually stands out. Your assement that there are other reasons is valid, but what makes it worse is the pot smoking. And I am not blaming all problems on this worthless weed, but all too often when a student gets the bottom, it often comes out there is a pot smoking problem.

If it does not change their behavior, why do they use it?

Making one feel good does not constitute profound changes in ones behavior.

I'm just not convinced that pot and a failing student are related. You know students who have problems smoke pot...I know students who have problems that do not smoke pot. Also know people who smoke pot with no problems.

I think it should also be disconcerting when a country feels the need to make it legal for people to have easy ways to escape reality and feel good.

I have never found that consistently trying to escape reality to feel good leads to positive things. Rather just the opposite occurs.

I would legalize it 100%. This and casinos would do the Commonwealth a ton of good, without changing the landscape of our society as it is now.

Halfback20. As you get older (I see you are 21) maybe you will begin to understand what LBBC and I are trying to say. I know your 1st response will be to think those old guys believe they think they everything.

Let me ask you something I often ask students. As juniors do want to be freshmen again? Do you believe have you changed since being a freshman? Well do you think you will change some more by the time you are out of college? 25? 50? Yes life has a way of teaching you and the longer you live the more is taught.

Maybe I should just not have any opinions on this board, because I'm only 21 years old.

Everyone has the same argument here. "When you are older, you will change your mind".

I do not agree. While I will admit that it is possible that my opinions will change, I do not think my age should be constantly used as an argument against my opinions that I have today. I do not smoke weed. I know better. However, I do not think it would be a bad idea to legalize it. I'm not sure that my opinion on this will change with age.

I will agree with you 100% that you have the right to voice your opinion. Just get this issue on the ballot and we will vote on it. One other thing to add............I'm sorry you are so misguided.

You most have forgotten about all of the lives that have been lost in drunk driving wrecks over the past 70 years. Surely, you are not going to say that more people died during prohibition than have died in wrecks involving alcohol.

Isn't that like blaming guns for gun related deaths?
