Covington Catholic Coaching Rumor Laid To Rest

Featured Replies

I'd say if you're among the few with a negative opinion of him, then you are likely to also be among those who know him the least. If anyone "who really knows him" has a negative opinion, it most assuredly is born of their own disapointments, and has nothing to do with Mike Listerman as a person. Every coach has to put up with a few of those types.

Right On!!!!

The only opinions that matter on a subject such as this one, imo, are those of his players, past and current. None of you are they. The rest of us are either grinding an axe, or drinking the cool-aid...Let's hear from some of the players from the past 5 seasons!

...With that said, I don't really care either way anymore what happens...but, I must say that some of that letter is just goofy. The part about the money is the dumbest point any coach could make. Every person in education could theoretically make similar statements and come up with hypothetic amounts of cash they and their families 'sacrificed'...in addition, wasn't he fired from Harrision County, then went to take the jv baseball job at Ludlow before coming to the jv basketball job at CovCath...Ludlow must pay their coaches a fortune!

The pro Listerman posts on here have truly gotten predictable and comical...doesn't matter the title of the thread...everytime there's an opportunity..one of you guys throws in that this coach is God's gift to CCH....it appears that "you protest too much" imo...

This coach seems to need that assurance, or at least the supporters on here, appear to need to keep saying it to each other more than any other coach by a LONG shot. Now we have a thread exclusively for it. Though you may need to change the title because as I read this letter, it simply confirms Listerman's position, which is not a news flash...

Too funny. I am very close to many many players who respect Listerman both as a coach and a person. Nice try once again.

Is there anything to the rumors that some of the schools better ballers are not playing b/c of him?

You will always have those parents who think their kids should get more playing time etc. It is everywhere. Kids transfer all the time. Listerman does a remarkable job with a bunch of average talented kids. When was the last time anyone from Cov Cath has gone on to play Bball at a big school.

These rumors seem to have began in the past couple of years...after the success he had in 04' in their Final Four run... Since then, CCH has had some great wins (Lex Cath. this year, a District Title last). IMO Holmes has had better basketball players starting in 05'; Holmes used to just have the better athletes.

I believe that Coach L has done a great job almost spliting with them the past two years (3-4) with lesser talent; unfortunalty they are 1-3 in tournament play.

As a former player of Coach L's I hate to see the criticism he receives because some parents believe that the reason their sons have not gone to the Final Four like the 04 team is because of the Coach. That team had a Division III (should have been All-American) 2 time All-Region and a Division I player. Could it be that the talent level has dropped in the past two seasons. One player playing backup PG in D III ball (Although Kurt Bovard had a great year).

Coaches are easy targets at the High School level because people believe it is wrong to criticize 14-18 year old kids (I believe in that also)...but don't blame one of the most successful coaches in the state. Mike's losses in the Regional tournaments recently have not come because of his new assistants, it is because his kids are not as good as the kids in the public school down the road.

I never thought Coach L was God's gift to Coaching but his record speaks for itself; some may not like his style (I was never a fan) but he is everything a CCH grad comes to admire in the way he conducts himself as a man/Colonel.

I am so glad he puts this to rest...always WASTWND

Great Post.

Who recently from the region has gone to a big time school?

I think Cov Cath has done exactly what they should have done the last 2 years, which is get beat by the better team. But they do and will always have top 3 in the region talent. I hope that it is no coincidence that they don't win the region any more b/c Schrand is gone.

whom?

whom?

Not stupid enough to mention names here. But if you look outside your little bubble you will find them, they are everywhere. Take off the blinders and talk to more than just the few unhappy people and you will be surprised. Lots of people can sit in the stands and critique what coaches do, most of these type have no clue, but it is really cool to sit in the stands and bad mouth the coach and make sure everyone hears you.

Neltner and Doellman from the 9th played at big time schools. Can't come up with anyone since they graduated.

Exactly so to say that CCH hasn't had major D1 talent doesn't sit well b/c not many other programs have either. The last 5 since those guys left high school have been Holmes 3 times and CCH twice I believe. 2 out of 5 regional titles is awesome and something to be very proud of. I just hope that losing Schrand was as big of a loss as I think it was.

Not just with Cov. Cath., but with any team, the parents who undermine the authority of the coach do their kids a real disservice. The contrast between the Cov. Cath. players rolling their eyes and talking among themselves while Coach Listerman was setting up strategy during tournament time-outs and the Holmes players glued to every word Coach Henley said was striking. The row 2 "coach" sitting in front of me at the 9th region finals at Conner was a classic. For about half the game he pontificated (at about 90 decibels) about how Cov. Cath. wasn't athletic enough to match up man-to-man with Holmes and how anyone could see the Colonels ought to be playing zone. When Cov. Cath. ultimately went to a zone, Terrance Clark became invisible on the baseline and flashed to an open spot for 2 easy layups in half court offense. Without missing a beat the row 2 "coach" started screaming (at about 95 decibels) that anyone with 1/2 a brain could see that against a team like Holmes you have to play man-to-man.

I agree. Plenty of 9th region programs would be thrilled to have won the region twice in the last 5 years.

Surely you can't be serious. You can quit hoping and wondering if Coach Schrand leaving had anything to do with Cov Cath continuing on with a great season this year and last. Listerman runs a Basketball machine. Every single year they compete with the best and always have impressive records.

As an outsider to CovCath's program, I think it's comical to read any negative posts about Mike Listerman. Not only do you have a good coach, but a great person who is dedicated to your program. He even sent his kids through CovCath. As a formal player of his (not at CovCath), I know how much he cares about his players both on and off the court. You would lose alot more than a coach if he left.
