Congrats to Mason Co. on winning the 2008 State Championship. And to my Holmes Bulldogs, you guys made all the alum, and most of N.Ky very proud. To Henderson and Avery, and the rest of the Sr.'s...Nothing but best wishes to all of you. Congrats on a great season. And to all you young men coming back: Don't forget that bad taste, strive to get back, and bring it all the way home.

 

As far as the game: Holmes had no answer for Miller, his size and ability to get to the rim was something the Dogs haven't seen this year. That being said, I believe Holmes was their own worst enemy tonight. Shooting wasn't real good from any where, under 50% from the line, and pretty sure under 40% from the field. Rebounding was very poor as well. As bad as Holmes played, they still were somehow able to hang around. As far as being tired like a friend suggested, that's not going to fly with me. I will say that Holmes had a little harder road to the finals, as far as competition, but both Teams played this afternoon.

 

Great tournament as usual, Some closing thoughts: I believe Miller is Mr. Basketball for 2008, based on what I seen from he, and Hopson. Sloan from Paintsville, I thought had the best looking shot. Holmes was probably the most athletic, and fun Team to watch. I believe Lex. Cath was the best Team, but the best Team doesn't always win these tournaments. I really enjoyed the way they reconized great players, and coaches from the past during the games. I thought the refs did a pretty good job, can only remember one really bad call.

 

Again, Congrats to Mason Co... Tonight you were better than Holmes.

When do they announce it?

Good Championship game by both squads. Henderson played solid as always for Holmes, and Russ Middleton and Darius Miller had great tournaments for Mason County. Ultimately, I think the tough game with Lex Cath this morning hurt Holmes in the long run...

 

As for the Sweet 16, it is truly the best high school sporting event in the state bar none. The storylines, the fanbases, the upsets all make it awesome. And trying to class basketball in KY would be a huge mistake; the 2008 Sweet Sixteen had small schools (Hazard, Paintsville), large schools (Shelby County), private schools (Lex Cath), traditional powers (Mason County, UHA), new faces (Greenwood), and up and coming programs (Holmes, Elliot) all jumbled into 4 days of great action...

What was the attendance for tonights finals ?

IMO- Kentucky has the BEST basketball tourney system. The all "A" for the smaller schools and the sweet 16 for the EVERYONE. I'am living in Houston and talk quite a bit about our system (94 MCHS alumni), they are amazed that we still have a no class BB tourney. I think as alot of you do that we have something very special in kentucky in our sweet 16. Lets keep this tradtion alive. WAY TO GO ROYALS !!!

It isn't easy to go from flag-fall to thats-all as one of the top teams in the state, expected to be there. Some of the others who were, weren't.

 

Win, win for Northern Kentucky tonight. Great to see another 9th/10th state finals, reminicent of the one back in 1981, only this time the Royals won. The 2008 banner will look nice hanging in the Fieldhouse alongside of 2003.

 

It has been fun watching Darius and company play for the past four years. We wish them all the best in the future.

 

I would have liked to see Madam Commissioner just skip to the chase and name Miller Mr. Basketball while he was collectiing his MVP trophy, but I know that is not realistic. The writers of the state's newspapers get to make it official, but I think that Darius solidifed that little piece of icing on the cake this week.

 

I thought that both teams looked tired tonight as I'm sure they both were. Coach Henley does a masterful job at Holmes and represented the 9th with class.

Congrats Royals!

Looked to me like Mason had the athletes to match up with Holmes defensively. Not many teams do. Was not as impressed with Miller as much as I was with Middleton. Miller is probably a better athlete, but Middleton looks like a better basketball player. Is he a Senior ? UK should be taking a look at him.
