I think this would be fair.

 

Teacher's Salary

 

Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year!

 

It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do--baby sit!

 

We can get that for less than minimum wage. That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked, not any of that silly planning time.

 

That would be $19.50 a day (7:00 AM to 3:30 (or so) PM with just 25 min. off for lunch).

 

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.

 

NOW...

How many do they teach in a class, 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! we're not going to pay them for any vacations.

 

LET'S SEE....

That's $585 x 180= $105,300 per year.

 

What about those special teachers and the one s with master's degrees?

 

Well, we could pay them minimum wage, and just to be fair, round it off to $7.00 an hour. That would be $7 x 6 1/2 hours x 30 children x 180 days = $245,700 per year.

 

Wait a minute--there's something wrong here!

 

Average teacher salary $50,000/180 days = $277/per day/30 students = $9.23/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student. A very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even try - w ith your help - to EDUCATE your kids!

 

WHAT A DEAL....

 

And the parents don't even have to buy us pizza!

 

 

I have the highest regard for teachers (I have MANY family members are teachers) but . . . I have to put this into perspective:

 

Social worker salary $38,000/330 days (state workers receive 11 paid holidays and about 24 days a year vacation and sick leave) =$115.15/day/low average of 25 children on their caseloads = $4.60/7.5hr = .61 cents per day/per child. And we’re trying to SAVE THEIR LIVES!!!!

Overworked??? I would take a teacher's schedule over mine any day. Now underpaid, that I will give you.

 

You would not work near as hard, nor would I ,for a coaches salary! That was the intent of the post. I assure you no teacher has my schedule or work load as well.

In regard to summer being paid time or not - it is all in how you look at it -

most jobs that require a college degree have a yearly salary - you can look at that as 52 40-hour weeks (2080 hours/year or 260 paid days)

 

In professions outside of teaching, you earn vacation time after you have worked a certain amount of time - you don't get snow days, school holidays, summers, time off to attend functions (i.e. tournaments), you don't usually have someone do your job when you are off (i.e. substitutes), you don't get a planning period to run to town and do errands! and you don't get those 10 days of so that can be used for whatever they want.

 

Teachers earn a yearly salary - you can divide that into 187 days or 12 months whatever you want - bottom line for both is it is a yearly salary that you can turn into an hourly/weekly or monthly figure as you want.

 

I would love to have the hours teachers have because they correspond with my children's schedules. But working outside the teaching profession I can miss work and I don't have to worry what my absence is doing to the students - my work will be there when I return to the office.

 

Kentucky needs to get a hold on instruction time - schedule meetings and professional days so they don't take teachers out of the classroom. Our children should get 187 days of instruction from a teacher - not a substitute. Substitutes should be for emergency situations.

 

So to tie this in with this post - coaches should not be expected or expect to attend the daytime games of the tournment just because they are a coach! The tournment should be reformated. Too many people (adults and students) are out this week and it distrupts the week for everyone else.

Coaches going to the state tournament has been allowed for decades. Some of you act as if this just started this year.

I would like to know about the 10 days they get to do what they want with I don't think my wife is aware of this Perk.

Than go get a degree become one then get your mandated masters degree for about 10 grand, don't worry they will reward you with about a 3000 raise.

Many of my good friends are teachers and it amazes me how much time they spend in their classrooms or at home "after school hours". Some people think that a good teachers job is only from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM each day. Most good teachers (note that I said good here) are in the classroom or doing work at home (grading, lesson plans, etc...) at least 10 extra hours (if not more) per week. Also many teachers work a lot in their classrooms in the summer.

 

There are definitely perks to the job of teaching, but for what these people do - they deserve them! If it was an easy or "cake" job everybody would do it

I had an administrator once who stood in the front of the room and told us that teachers needed to schedule surgeries and pregnancies to come do in the summer time so that they wouldn't miss any school days for operations or giving birth.

I didn't mean to say a teacher is paid for summer. What I am trying to say is it is a yearly salary and you have to divide it by the number of hours you are scheduled to work.

 

Therefore if a teacher is paid $50,000/year and they work 180 days that equals $34 per hour if you consider a day equals 8 hours. In business if a person is paid $50,000 a year they are expected to work 260 days which equals $24 per hour. The reason I am using a yearly salary is because I don't know of any teachers who are hired by the hour.

 

I do realize most teachers and people in business work more hours than they are paid for when you are in a salaried position as opposed to an hourly paid position but there really isn't any way to factor that in.

 

I have the upmost respect and admiration for most teachers - my complaint is with the system that allows the students needs to be ignored.

Coaches are underpaid and overworked. I think the trip to the tourney is warranted in all cases. Teachers still attend art shows, FBLA conventions,FFA conventions, etc. even when they are not participating in the convention. Do you have any idea how many trips your superintendent and board members take every year to Florida,Vegas, etc.? There isn't many teachers in any system that would put the time, effort and heart into coaching for what they are paid!

Coaches make the choice to be a coach and put in a certain amount of work. You can cry about them being overpaid and over worked, but the fact of the matter is they dont have to coach to get by and they dont HAVE to put in a ton of hours like many do. It's best that you do if you want to be successful, but again, its not a requirement like being at school all day as a teacher.

I don't know of any HS coach that is overpaid. They put in a lot of work.
