I think the school does pay for the trip if the school isn't in the state tourny. If they get pay, they would just have to take paid vacation would be my guess.

 

Being married to a teacher I know that many teachers would like to take a paid vacation... They just don't get any paid vacation days.

Auditors are now telling school districts that if they pay for the coach's tickets to the state tournament, than that has to be turned into the central office as a perk and are to be taxes as such.

 

I know from personal experience you can get invited to tournaments across the state through attending and networking. You can find summer camps and scrimmages the same way.

 

I have picked up plays to run (still run an out of bounds play that I picked up in the late 90's and it still works) from watching teams with similar personnel to mine.

 

In addition, it gives the staff a great chance to discuss personnel for next year and what defenses and offenses would best work with the returning personnel. Or at least it does for those schools who are not going to be enhanced by players transferring in.

Coaches are underpaid and overworked. I think the trip to the tourney is warranted in all cases. Teachers still attend art shows, FBLA conventions,FFA conventions, etc. even when they are not participating in the convention. Do you have any idea how many trips your superintendent and board members take every year to Florida,Vegas, etc.? There isn't many teachers in any system that would put the time, effort and heart into coaching for what they are paid!

 

 

As a club sponsor, I have visited Tijuana Mexico, Anaheim, Denver, NYC, Washington DC, Orlando, Mall of America, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, San Francisco, all on student trips.

 

I also put in many, many hours with students getting them to the level they needed to be to win and advance to these levels of competition or via being a state officer.

The degree of funding is set by the individual schools.

It is a well-deserved respite from the long season, just completed.

 

NO! The KHSAA does not accept coaches passes BUT provides each school with a pair of tickets and most schools buy extras. The norm is a set of four tickets per school, which are located primarily in the lower arena side area. Schools that buy extra tickets above the four option, receive seats in the corners of the lower arena.

 

The bolded needs to be addressed. It is ridiculous to charge coaches to attend the state tournament of their sport.

We don't? How about fall break, spring break, Christmas break, three days at Thanksgiving? Most consider this time paid vacation. We still get money, even though we aren't in the class room. I don't consider summer, because some schools pay for the year before the school year ends.

Those are unpaid breaks.

 

We get 3 paid Holidays per year.

 

Personal days are different per district. Mine we get one personal day and 10 sick days.

We can get that for less than minimum wage. That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked, not any of that silly planning time.

 

That would be $19.50 a day (7:00 AM to 3:30 (or so) PM with just 25 min. off for lunch).

 

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.

How many do they teach in a class, 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! we're not going to pay them for any vacations.

Well, we could pay them minimum wage, and just to be fair, round it off to $7.00 an hour. That would be $7 x 6 1/2 hours x 30 children x 180 days = $245,700 per year.

Average teacher salary $50,000/180 days = $277/per day/30 students = $9.23/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student. A very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even try - w ith your help - to EDUCATE your kids!

And the parents don't even have to buy us pizza!

No teachers do not get paid for the summer their salary is based on 187 days of work. They get checks for the summer but their salary is divided by 26 pay periods. (At least this is how my wifes district works) She gets 10 sick days and 3 personal days, and zero paid vacation days. No complaints I just found it funny when someone said take vacation days, because teachers really do not have paid vacation days like most careers.

No, they do not. Teachers pay is figured based on the 187 days worked. Summer time is not a paid time.

 

Teachers can choose to have their pay for the 187 days they are paid spread over 12 months but they are not paid for that time.
