UK vs. Marquette History

Featured Replies

Very good infomation. Issel and Casey never did make a final four run did they. Only Maguire could get that under someone's skin. :D

Nope they didn't make it. Issel made a Regional Final in '70 but they were upset by Jacksonville when Dan fouled out with about 15 minutes to play. Casey broke his leg that off season and did not get to play with him on that '70 squad.

I read that McGuire would not go on Rupp's show without an honorarium and that got the old coach started. Then McGuire complained that the ball they were using had Rupp's name on it. Rupp replied, "We'll be glad to play with one with Al's signature on it . . . if you can find one."

Later Al complained that UK got the home team bench and the home uniforms. Rupp said, "We don't care, if they want to sit there that's fine. He'll know who the home team was when the game starts." :D

The next year the 2 teams met again in Madison ('71) and McGuire said he did the one thing he regretted over all the years of his coaching. He used the race card to fire up his team against UK and Rupp. It worked and Marquette upset UK before a virtual home crowd.

Ironically the next year McGuire was talking about how great Rupp was as he was finishing up his final season. Al became a big UK hugger later in life, particularly in retirement.

Yeah I knew he liked Kentucky when he did TV. He did alot of games here. That is some good stuff. Thanks for the info. :thumb:

According to Cawood Ledford one of the UK wins hurt KY more. When Al Maguire showed up on the '68 tourney at Lexington he created a stink and got under Rupp's skin. The result was that the UK team was pretty fired up and took it out on Marquette to the tune of 107-89.

Problem was that UK spent all it's emotion and energy on them and came out flat against a good Ohio State team in the Regional Final. The Buckeyes beat UK on a last second basket and sent Sophomores Dan Issel and Mike Casey home without a Final Four appearance.

I remember the '75 game and Hall's team broke that one open in the 2nd half and used it as momentum all the way through IU and to the Title Game. That was a good Marquette team with Bo Ellis, Earl Tatum and Butch Lee.

It might also be noted that the last Collegiate Victory for Adolph Rupp was vs. Marquette in the '72 Mideast Regional.

Also add Mike Pratt to that list of Sophomores on that team.;)

Would that be "Wildcat Great" Mike Pratt?:D

I think we're due a win against the Eagles!

Maybe becasue the title is UK vs. Marquette History... :sssh:

THANK you. It didn't say UK vs. Marquette predictions, it said history, and I was just stating that the last time these two teams met, Dwayne Wade lit them up.

Was it the '69 or '71 game that George Thompson (I think) for the Warriors spelled UK's doom?

There was a senior point guard on that 68 UK team that tried to get Rupp to let him foul, so they would get the ball back tied with a chance to win. Rupp made them play straight up, and OSU hit the last second shot. Back then there was no bonus, if you committed a foul the other team got 1 shot. UK was up 1 had they fouled, they would have been tied with ball in the last 15 seconds.

McGuire certainly did get under Rupp's skin, but later talked about how much he respected and idled him after Rupps retirement.

Well,he's the only Mike Pratt I know.:thumb:
