WOW! Owensboro sure stands alone on this. I'm surprised at the numbers in the 9th as I thought CCH would have been much higher. Why wouldn't they include the early 8 from Holmes? Wasn't it the same school?

Yes I agree that is very important to note, because they were going up against Ashland which has 32 apperances.

The old Covington high school and Holmes were different schools. Covington High was the all black high school if I'm not mistaken and Holmes was where the white folks went. When the two schools combined they went to Holmes.

 

I know Holmes includes Covington High's region championships though. All of their banners are hanging in the rafters at Holmes from the 20's, 30's, and early 40's.

Actually, the varsity letters that the student athletes receive at Holmes is a wishbone "C", in recognition of their tradition and history.

On the school facade over the main entrance into the high school, reads Covington High School, in cement or mortar or whatever that stuff is.

I am sure a simple appeal to the KHSAA would correct that.

So then correct me if I'm wrong, Holmes does indeed have 19 state appearances then...correct?

Shelby Valley has 5 trips to the state tourney from the 15th but the school didn't even open until the 90's, before that it was Virgie and another school maybe Dorton or something like that. Virgie made several trips with Mr. Basketball Todd May.

This list has only current schools. I'm sure many regions have several schools that have since consolidated that made numerous trips to the Sweet 16. In the 14th region, Carr Creek, MC Napier, and Hindman are examples of schools that had strong Sweet 16 traditions. Carr Creek and Hindman were the champs in one of the years they were there.
