Abstinence "education" alone will not work, because kids have ALWAYS made decisions to go against their parents' or church's wishes. What do we do about those kids? I think that is what people want to believe but there has been a movement recently that more and more teenagers are choosing to stay a virgin till their honeymoon days. More and more you see this occurring. Don't give up on them to do what is right if they are encouraged to do what is right. Rather in our society, we teach them that all of the other teens are doing it and they must be weird or something to choose abstinence. Hollyweird shows them over and over and over that it is okay to be sexually active and you can be held as a role model for having sex as a teen or preteen. Of course, some are going to be active because they fall for the lies that are being told to them by so many in our society.

However, I think some people want to believe that just by "preaching/teaching" astinence that it will solve the problem and kids won't have sex.
March 13, 200818 yr This being a part of my job for the 28 years I worked I am not in the least surprised. What I am surprised at is that the numbers are that low. I don't mean to scare people but trust me when I say, they are going to have sex. I have seen children as young as 12 come in with a STD or pregnant. This is very serious business. There are STD's out there that can make you unable to have children and there are STD's out there that will kill you. As a parent it is foolish to think that your child won't do this. We tried to go into as many schools that would allow us in to discuss this with children but even some of the schools act as if they want to hide their heads in the sand also. I'm not saying that all children will have sex because that just isn't true. But there are enough children who are that this is truly a dangerous situation.
March 13, 200818 yr Reproduction not sex is necessary for the survival of all human and animal life on earth. Are you saying teens are having sex for reproduction purposes? Is that the school's responsibility or the parents? I don't want the school to step in and teach my impressionable preteen child something that stands in stark contrast to what I am teaching at home. Basically, what you are saying is that schools should step in and tell 10, 11, 12 year olds that their parents are wrong and this is what they should be doing. What about the schools being responsible for teaching EDUCATION? The 3 R's rather than putting the schools in charge of teaching social issues. Sex is needed in order to reproduce, and I said in my last post that I don't think that teenagers should be having sex. At some point, regardless of what they've been told, some teenagers WILL have sex. That is undeniable. I am not against teaching abstinence, I am against teaching abstinence only. Proper sex education is a good thing. This is a little off subject, but what about the HPV vaccine? Should girls not get the shot, and just be told to not have sex in the first place? In my opinion it makes sense to protect them just incase. Same with education. Teach them how to protect themselves just incase, but STRONGLY encourage abstinence.

There was a study done by Health Departments around the US about a year ago that interviewed many of the teens that had been involved in these programs, and that an overwhelming number were involved in sexual activity that wasn't intercorse, and they did not belive that it violated thier pledge to remain a virgin. Abstinence only is the best, but all teens need to truly understand how STD'S can be transmitted. Might sound weird to some, but I learned a good amount of my Sex Ed (not just abstinence) from my church.
