With the Lakers on TV on Sunday, the comment was made that Kobe's 81 point game from two years ago was more impressive than Wilt's 100 in 1962.

 

Kobe's 81:

In "only" 42 minutes, he was 28-46 (60.9%) from the field, 7-13 (53.8%) on threes, and 18-20 (90%) on free throws. His teammates scored 41 points on 14-42 (33.3%) shooting. The Lakers actually trailed Toronto by 18 points before winning 122-104.

He outscored Toronto 55-41 in the second half. He was averaging 35.9 PPG after this game.

Wilt's 100:

In 48 minutes, he was 36-63 (57.1 %) from the field and 28-32 (87.5%) on free throws. His teammates scored 69 points on 27-52 (51.9%) shooting. Philadelphia won the game 169-147.

Philly scored 90 points in the second half! Wilt AVERAGED an all-time record 50.4 points per game this season, 25.7 rebounds per game, and 48.5 minutes per game (10 overtime periods during the season and he only missed 8 minutes all year). He shot 50.6% from the field for the season (somewhat low for the most dominate player in the league and was a career 51.1% free throw shooter--note the 87.5% in the 100 point game.

It's hard to judge since hardly anyone saw Wilt's.

 

True but given the style of play, the score itself, Wilt's stats and dominance over the league at the time, it pretty easy to imagine how it went down. Hardly anyone alive now saw the 1927 Yankees play and there's very little video but they're always mentioned as the greatest baseball team ever.

Wilt was an inside player, so he was closer to the basket, so it made it easier to score. They were not as big and strong as they are now. Kobe is a guard so he was hitting 15+ foot jumpers all night. Yes he made some threes, but Wilt was shooting VERY high percent shots, as Kobe was shooting contested, jump shots. I am not saying that Wilt was not contested, but it is easier to make a shot 5 feet from the basket than 15 feet. Kobe was more impressive because of the way the game is played these days.

I can't stand Kobe and this is Wilt's second most impressive statistic so he gets the nod...

 

Forgot to list that "other" statistic on the list. BTW, isn't that nearly impossible?

I don't know, he travelled an awful lot. Give me a daily and weekly average and I'll let you know...
