I believe Kobe is the greatest perimeter player ever, but I think 100 is more impressive. Tony Kornheiser said on PTI today that you have to take into account Kobe hit seven 3's in the game. Wilt didn't have that option. So, if you count the fieldgoals as 2 pointers like Wilt shot and take free throws into account, Kobe would have scored 74 points in Wilt's day compared to Wilt's 100.

 

Even if you don't buy that arguement, 100 is still more than 81 by about 20%.

Kobe shot a better percentage in every stat, did it from farther out on the floor, took many fewer shots, scored a higher percentage of his team's points, played 6 fewer minutes, etc. I'd go with Kobe's.

^ It's harder to hit a 3 than a Dunk like Wilt was doing all night.

Wilt definitely took higher-percentage shots as a big man. Kobe got seven bonus points by virtue of the three-point line, which didn't exist in 1962, regardless of whether Wilt would have utilized it.

 

Wilt, like Bill Russell, was ahead of his time in that league and dominated in a way that no other player (save Russell) ever has or will. That works in favor of Kobe, who plays in a league of striking parity (despite the play of the Knicks and Heat).

 

I'm going to suprise even myself and vote Kobe on this one.

A three is tougher to hit than a 5-10 footer, however Wilt was getting doubled and tripled every night he didn't play against Russell, so you have to take that into account as well.

What about the fact that there was no goal tending at the time? He could catch a shot from a teammate and dunk it at any point while in flight. What about the lane area? It was only 12 feet wide (was 6 feet at one point, hence, the "top of the key" because the lane was shaped like a key) and he could stand right under the basket without 3 second being called.
