I'd say its getting to the point that she'll do anything... If she thought giving a speech wearing booby tassels and a thong while talking in Pig Latin would revive her campaign, she'd do it. JMO

Hillary has a very versatile accent. She can sound southern when in the south and has been known to try to "sound black" when speaking to a predominantly black church congregation. Treating her audience of the moment as one big stereotype has probably not helped her poll numbers.

My accent changes with my environment, too. My speech patterns mimic those around me. I take my "Kentucky" accent with me to Colorado every summer to visit my dad (who is hispanic) and come back sounding hispanic. As a matter of fact, I can be on the phone with him and five minutes later, have the hispanic accent back.

 

Does this make me phoney? I don't think so. For the record, I am proud of both accents!

If you intentionally change your accent to appeal to an audience, then you are a phony. If your surroundings influence your accent because of your immersion in a different culture, no you are not a phony.

 

Hillary's accent changes from one campaign stop to the next, so yes I believe that she easily qualifies as a phony. The late Carl Perkins had separate accents for Washington, DC and Knott County. In DC, he spoke very good English without much of an accent. When campaigning back home, he suddenly began mangling the language to the point where "agriculture" became "agculture."

 

Politicians who talk down to their constituents by changing their grammar and accent make me sick and I believe that most people feel similarly insulted.

He spent most of his childhood in Texas and nearly all of his adult life there. Hillary was born and raised in Illinois. I'm pretty sure his accent is genuine and her's is not. But why let facts get in the way of a good Bush-bashing when he's not the subject?

Probably because GHWB was born and raised in Massachusetts and Connecticut. You see, when you're learning to speak (childhood years), the area you GROW UP in will usually determine how you speak and what accent you have. Which would explain all of the above. This really isn't that complicated.
