First of all I don't think an official should do a game involving a school that he attended, and for the most part, I don' think this happens. As far as a friend, former teammate, or college roommate, I think it depends on the current relationship. I don't know what the relationship is in this situation, but I'd say a lot of people stay in contact with their college roommate and many remain really close friends for life. If that is the case, then he shouldn't be doing the games, and by doing the games, I'd say the official himself would be partly to blame. It would be in his best interest to remove himself from the game and avoid being subjected to unwarranted criticism. Again, I don't know about this particular situation. If the two really haven't remained in close contact over the years, then I really don't see that big of a deal with it. However, if the KHSAA also sent a letter to the official and to the assigning secretary as has been posted here earlier, then I'd say they felt the relationship may have crossed the line.

 

Either way, my point was that Coach Hicks' comments came after a very emotional game where the stakes were about as big as they get. I don't think his comments were that unusual or out of line. Regardless, he chose to self-impose a one game suspension to avoid any further distractions.

I just don't think there will be an easy place to draw the line. You open a whole can of worms limiting where an official can and cannot work. And obviously there are ways that schools and officials can avoid certain schools/coaches/officials. I just think that there's not a real solid way to police who knows who in the officiating/coaching community. If there's no integrity from an official of a basketball game then that official won't be around long.

Officials and coaches have a mutual respect for each other. Usually when the game is over, everything is fine. How many coaches actually believe they lost only because of the officiating. I would venture to say that there are twenty to thirty calls that "could go either way". These seem to be the ones that cause the most problems.

 

In all my experience of calling games, (a few I might add) instinct takes over. You see the play develope, in a tenth of a second your brain tells you to blow your whistle.

 

What makes a good official? Someone who calls the same each and every night out. Good officials see the play develope and without thinking make the call.

 

To say people can not officiate if you know this person and do this this and that with them is crazy. A good official makes a call without thinking, and s right at an alarming clip believe it or not.

 

Case in point. I got called to officiate a game around here on a short notice, they had an official that couldn't make it. The game got ugly QUICK, 36-4 mid way through the second. The coach of the winning team, who I work with asked me to just give them the ball on anything close. This was the hardest thing to do, you see the play happen, before you know it you have made the call. The other team in this game I coached the 7th 8th grade for two years. Relationships play a role so small that it should not be mentioned in how an official (esp in this case) calls a game.

It seems to me you're questioning the integrity of the official when you say there's a conflict of interest. I'm sure Coach Hicks knew well before the game that Coach Fraley and the official were college roommates. I know that the school's AD and Coach Hicks would have known the officiating assignment for that game long before the game was played, and that they could have requested another official. It sounds like a case of sour grapes after losing on Hicks's part to me. I mean have you ever seen Coach Hicks on the sideline. He is the most theatrical coach I've ever seen. He grabs his head in disbelief after each call against his team, even the ones that are fairly obvious.

 

Good Post!! I was surprised in the least to see this story. It always seems like Hicks is saying something about the officials or acting like a madman on the sidelines. It's a shame too because I think he's got a lot of potential to become an extraordinary coach. He knows basketball and he knows how to coach great defense and win games but his mouth always gets him in trouble. Like you stated above, I'm sure he knew well in advance the situation of the official and I'd say that that official has called many Fraley games in the past with no complaints from losing coaches. Hicks is just sour about losing as always.

I listened to the entire show and no names came up. So unless you were listening how would you know? Both of the guys on the raido said no names came up. They didn't need to.

 

Its funny if it was never mentioned that everybody in the 16th region knows who he was talking about.

Impossible. Our region would be official-less. And although some might think that an improvement:D. Simply impossible. Great theory. Not reality.

Now, Mr. 85, I hope you're not serious. I hope this was said tongue in cheek. It's no secret that drama and controversy follow ole Coach Hicks like that dust cloud follows around Pigpen from the Peanuts. I don't think that there's any doubt he can coach. The doubt lies elsewhere.

Coulda stopped there! Just another example of "hearsay".

The AD, principal, superintendent, and the parents asked Coach Hicks to fight this because he had done nothing wrong. The principal listened to the radio show and his was going to be one of many letters sent to the KHSAA saying no names were said on the radio.Hicks wanted it settled and done so it didn't affect his KIDS.

It is certain that you do not like Coach Hicks. If you had any understanding about sports then you would know that his players love him. Just go watch them play. They play extremely hard for him. Why do you think that is? I will tell you why because his players truely know that he does love them and cares about them. That is why he has success. Please do not speak about things in which you have no idea what you are talking about. Just make a trip to Owingsville and ask anybody what they think of Coach Hicks and then get back to me with what you found out.
