So you know Baseball....

R1, 1 Out. Groundball to third who throws to 2nd for the forceout. 2nd baseman steps to the 3rd base side of 2nd to pivot and throw to first to attempt to complete the DP. R1 slides at the 2nd baseman who has to hop over him to make the throw. Throw is wild . Note: the runner sliding into 2nd was able to reach 2nd base with his arm while making the slide.

Anything?

MLB rules or high school?

If MLB, I would say nothing. If high school, I would say interference on runner and would call double play if umpire felt throw to 1B had any reasonable chance to throw out batter-runner.

I can't get ANYTHING by you. Many don't know the Force Play Slide Rule exists in high school.

I just get lucky sometimes. ;)

Actually, I am a "bit" of a baseball rules nut. Don't know why it intrigues me so much, it just does. But I always love to hear of scenarios/rules that I don't know (and I'm sure there are a lot of them out there!).

Batter hits a long fly ball down the left field line, F7 catches the ball while his feet are completly in fair territory and the ball is clearly in foul territory, is this is a foul ball? Yes or no? Being a catch and an out is not in question, we all know it's an out.

Foul ball. Feet or body position, are not relevant to fair or foul, when determining where ball would land, unimpeded.

:thumb: I was also told that, if the runner sliding into 2nd was not sliding directly into the bag and to the side of it(although you could still reach out and touch it) that Interference was called and the other runner was out.

That can't be true right? ;)

Ok, cshs, K3 (and any others) - here's your next batch: :thumb:

#1) No outs, runner on 1B. Batter swings and misses for strike three, but catcher drops the ball. Batter runs to first and the runner on first heads toward second. The catcher recovers the ball and throws quickly towards SS, who tags second base before runner arrives, and then fires to 1B (beating batter-runner). Call?

#2) 2-2 count on batter. Batter tips next pitch, which hits catcher’s mitt, then ricochets off his chest protector, and then is caught cleanly by catcher. Call?

#3) Runner at 1B. Batter hits a pop fly to 2Bman, who sees batter has not run to first. He intentionally drops the ball, fires to SS at second base, who then fires to 1B, easily beating batter. Call?

#4) Bases loaded, one out, 1-1 count on the batter. 3B runner gets a great jump and tries to steal home. As he slides over the plate the pitch hits him in the strike zone and bounces a few feet away. The catcher recovers ball and nails runner trying to advance from second to third, while the runner on first stays there. Ruling? (It's pretty odd.)

#5) Runner at 1B, two out. Batter hits double, putting runners at 2B and 3B. Before the next pitch, the pitcher sees batter-runner standing off bag at second and quickly throws to SS to pick him off, but runner makes it back safely. Defensive coach then instructs pitcher to appeal to umpire that batter had missed first base (which he did and umpire saw this). Ruling?

Good luck. :p

Since you've already answered 1, 3-5 I'll give #2 a shot.

Batter is out. As long as ball contacts the mitt first it is live and thus the batter is able to be put out. If it had contacted anything else first it would be a foul ball.

It was a foul ball caught for an out.

Here's an interesting tidbit. What do you put in the book if the LF drops this foul ball?

Here are a few more:

1. 1-2 count. 0 out. Runners on 1st(R1) and 3rd(R3). Pitcher delivers the ball to the plate legally, but the pitch is in the dirt and is taken by the batter. The catcher jumps up and starts looking around for the ball. Upon seeing this R3 breaks for home. The catcher finds the ball behind his chest protector and quickly pulls it out and tags R3. What is the call?

2. Same scenario but the ball is found in the umpire's ball bag.

3. Bases loaded. 1 out. 0-0 count. Batter hits a chopper in the infield to the SS. SS fires the ball to the plate but the throw is low and in the dirt and becomes lodged in the catcher's shin guard(this actually happened). What is the call? Place all runners.

Just guesses, but I'll try:

1) Ball is still in play and live, so play stands (runner out at plate) and count on batter is 2-2.

2) Dead ball, all runners entitled to advance one base.

3) Dead ball. Runner at home safe, batter given first base.

Happen to be home today, so I checked my books. At this point, I'm not sure where I erred on #1, so I'll have to wait to see what you say. It would seem that the ball remained in play (no different than ball getting stuff in webbing of a player's glove) and no penalties. For #3, I'll try again and say to put the batter-runner on second base and move all other runners accordingly. The ball is clearly out of play, thus a two-base award. I should have said this originally - wasn't thinking.
