Small (Class A) Schools of the 16th Region

Featured Replies

I just wanted to start a thread giving a big :thumb::thumb: and "Atta Boys" to the teams from the small schools of the 16th region.Depending on ones opinions imo that 5 of the top 6 teams this season are class A schools.

Elliot Co., Rose Hill, Bath Co., Fairview and Raceland all have pretty decent teams and imo one of these will win the 16th Region (probably Elliot). I would love to see an all Class A region final.

Congrats and good luck in your Districts and Regional to the coaching staff's and players of all of these teams, you work hard and it is coming through loud and clear this season in the 16th Region. :thumb:

(also, good luck to the "little guys" in all regions)

Good point oldrambler, the 1A schools in the 16th Region are doing very well. In my opinion the 1A schools in this region always do a decent job, but they have definitely stepped it up a notch this season.

If you look at East Carter they are not very big either and could be possibly number 2 or 3 in the region. It is great to see the small schools give it all they have to make it happen

I would first like to say Congrats to all the All A schools as well and they represent the Region well.

On another note though, I believe smaller schools have an advantage in some sports and that is because they believe in using ALL of their students to play ALL sports, which puts good athletes there for ALL sports. A lot of the larger schools preach to their players that you should only do one sport and the players believe that, which takes a good athlete out of another sport that he could be helping the team out in. Just my opinion.

Agree:thumb:

Also , it seems in larger schools alot of students are cut starting in seventh grade that might be late bloomers. However they never get the chance , because "the die has been cast" on that child by a coach or group of coaches too early.

I agree kids do get weeded out before they blossum. I have seen that in Larger School Youth Leagues many of times, and we all know once a kid quits that they never return. These days and times it is hard enough to keep the dedicated players playing, moreless talk a kid into coming back after getting cut at a younger age.

Also think it is sad that the Coach that made a decision that affected another child normally is a Dad as well.

I think Baseball is the worst sport for this in our area though. Taking players at a very young age for JV and cutting a 9/10th grader that has worked hard for the system for years to make room for them. Most of these 7th/8th graders that are taken to replace an older kid will be replaced by a 7th/8th grader themselves in just a couple of years, due to the fact their parents allowed them to get in the system before they were ready and that is what the coaches will judge them by and will never allow them a chance again, even if they do become better and ready. Baseball is the only sport that doesnt have Middle School teams and that hurts our Area really. It would be one thing if the school size made it to where you had to use younger kids to have the numbers, but to be picking up younger kids just so they wont jump to another school system or that you needed someone to mow the grass is another.

I always root for the smaller class A schools, and love to see them do well. I as well would love to see 2 or 3 class A schools make the Sweet 16 come March. Correct me if I am wrong, but the last class A team to make it to the state finals was Paintsville in 1998. Is that correct?? Also, is Paintsville the last class A team to win a state championship in 1996?

With the growth of JV baseball it has helped, but what you guys wrote is so true if Jordan would have listened to his 9th grade coach we would have missed out on one of the greatest of all time

You make a good point and one that has been discussed quite a few times on here (playing only one sport).

My opinion on this has been well documented :D. I think that a high school kid/athlete should be able to paticipate in any and all sports that they want to and their parents will allow them and they can and still keep up with their academics.

One thing that absolutely burns may behind is a coach of one sport telling a kid not to play in another sport! This has happened at the small, class A schools as well as the larger ones. Who the heck are they to deprive a kid of something like that ?

Especially in a small class A school all schools/teams need all of their athletes on the field, on the track, court or whatever the sport. Some sports overlap and cannot be helped but I have seen and known of things being worked out with that as well.

I also have personally known of one coach to tell a kid NOT to play in another sport if he expected to play for him, or would hold it against the kid in playing on his team and punish him by limiting playing time ! That my friend imo is a classless jerk that is only in it for himself and not the kids.

That person imo was not a "Coach", rather a "ego maniac". That type of thinking is one of if not my main "burning points "! .

I do undertsanad some wanting a kid to concentrate on one sport bc they think they may be able to advance/ get a scholly in that sport. I just think that any kid should be able to play any and all sports that they want to and that they can.

O.K., I have vented and apologize. Lets get on with it.

Kudos to all of the 16th region class A schools and other small schools of all regions. They imo are what Ky. High School Sports are all about.

As Dick Vitale has said......"a boy, a ball and a dream". That same thing goes for all of the ladies sports as well :thumb:.

I noticed that the 16th appeared to get a pretty decent draw in the Sweet Sixteen, as well. Would be awesome to see a Class A school (preferrably Elliott County) make a run to the state semifinals. :thumb:

That would be Sweet!:thumb:

You are imo correct about East not being real big school. I think that they are AA and they have very good basketball team as well.

I was speaking mostly about the class A schools. :thumb:

Decent draw? Didn't they draw the 10th Region? Doesn't that likely mean Mason County in the first game?

By the way, it's important to note the subsequent decline of the "big" programs in the region that have went along with the rise of the "little guys." Ashland hasn't been to Rupp since 2002. Boyd County went to the state tournament six times between 1990 and 2000, but hasn't been since. Greenup County hasn't won the region since 1997 and Rowan County won three straight in the late 1980s and then won one (2005) in the remaining period.

I applaud the small schools and they are partly responsible for the decline of the big boys, but at the same time, those big programs have had quite a few struggles over the last few years.
