January 25, 200818 yr I have a question? Do all the public school supporters think that there are no public schools that are actively recruiting? Do all the private school supporters think that there is no recruiting going on by privates? I just want a simple yes or no answer.( I know this is not gonna happen). If you support private schools state that you do and that you think that the privates are 100% clean. If you are a public school supporter, then state if you think the publics are 100% clean. Like a alcoholic before we can fix something,we must first admit something is wrong, ( if something is wrong). But this is where it must start, to be totally honest. Lets hear it.
January 25, 200818 yr Neither side is 100% clean. I agree with you. We also need to understand, on both sides that illegal recruting is not a public or a private issue.
January 25, 200818 yr Both sides recruit. As I have said, I don't believe that the vast majority of recruiting is going on by the coaches but rather by the parents and supporters in the stands outside of the HS season.
January 25, 200818 yr Author I dont think I have ever heard anyone on the private side say that the privates recruit. I just want to get what everyones true feelings are, with no spin.
January 25, 200818 yr Define "recruiting"? Do mean clearly illegal, giving away tuition money or jobs type recruiting? Or do you mean that murky grayish brown area of Coaches showing up at youth games recruiting? Or do you mean that other area where your rich uncle wants to go to a certain school, takes you to all the games, buys you team t-shirts and offers to help out with the tuition type of recruiting? The latter two happen often by both. It's the norm. The blatantly illegal form of recruiting described first I think is rare for public or private schools.
January 25, 200818 yr Author Illegal recruiting, plain and simple. Think on it before you reply. Including what ladiesbballcoach has alluded to happening( which is how 90% of it happens).
January 25, 200818 yr All schools in Jefferson County recruit students. I am not naive to believe that all schools on either side are squeeky clean but I do believe that recruiting of athletes is no where near as rampant as some would have us believe. I also believe wholeheartedly that the private school I support does everything it can to prevent illegal recruiting. I am also very staunchly in favor of harsh punishment when a school is found in violation.

The intent and action of recuiting as defined by KHSAA in Bylaw 10 is actually very well defined...and reasonable...until that last sentence. But then KHSAA has expanded the bylaw in their silly Case Studies. Via that mechanism KHSAA will classify any breaking of a Bylaw 7 rule (financial handling) as a Bylaw 10 (Recuiting) violation. In both the well-publicized Lexington area cases at least a portion the wrong doing based on unofficial disclosure (i.e. not an official KHSAA report) was attempts to help students already enrolled to stay at the school. But the financial help came through unapproved routes and sources - a clear breaking of the KHSAA rules in Bylaw 7. In these instances KHSAA reported the violations as Bylaw 10 violations though these acts had nothing to do with luring or stealing a potential players. The noticable recuitment I have seen is internal. Convincing kids that are already at the school or schools to play a sport they would not otherwise play. This, in itself, takes a lot of time and energy. Chasing 'outside' talent is good stuff for rumors but its not done nearly the extent some here think is.
January 25, 200818 yr There have been instances of illegal recruiting on both the public side, and the private side. I don't believe all cases of illegal recruiting by either side were intentional. I do believe that intentional, or unintentional, recruiting vilolations should be punished. I do believe that even if the violation occurs by the school(s) that I support, there should be a punishment. I do not believe that there should be any difference in the way the schools are treated, if violations have occurred and are proven. All that said, I also believe that the school(s) I support do everything they can to ensure that no improprieties happen. I also know they print, on a full page, in their sports programs, the KHSAA bylaws relative to recruiting so that each and every one of us know as well..
January 25, 200818 yr Illegal recruiting, plain and simple. Think on it before you reply. Including what ladiesbballcoach has alluded to happening( which is how 90% of it happens). Considering that a parent from school A talking to a parent/kid from school B about attending or playing a sport with their kid at school A is illegal recruiting...everyone does it...
January 25, 200818 yr My kids attend a private school, so I suppose I am a private school supporter. I believe improper recruiting probably does go on in public and private schools. I can honestly say I don't think my children's school does it. Yes, they advertise for/recruit students, but all private schools have to seek students, else the doors would have to close. I don't think our school recruits for athletic purpsoses. Usually it's the opposite; we lose many kids to the county schools. My children's school has about 300 students PK-12. I can only relate to my experience at a small private school. I have no direct knowledge of the larger private schools. I don't personally know of any cases where private schools have recruited athletes, but I do know of some who have been recruited by public schools. Either way, this is yet another example of adults ruining kids' sports.:irked:
January 26, 200818 yr Considering that a parent from school A talking to a parent/kid from school B about attending or playing a sport with their kid at school A is illegal recruiting...everyone does it... Exactly....As a parent I'm guilty as charged. Recruited my own son and a few of his 8th grade classmates to go to X (I said words to this effect, "Timmy, where ya going to school next year. Timmy said, "Iunno." I said,"Be a Tiger, you'd look good in green and gold." Somebody better report me.
January 26, 200818 yr For that matter, what about kid to kid? My son always knew he wanted to go to Trinity. Some of his friends always knew they were going to X. Others of his friends didn't know which. My son, of course, talked up Trinity, and the X friends talked up X. Some kids wound up at Trinity, some at X. My son even shadowed X, "just to be sure".
January 26, 200818 yr Good luck figuring this out... Bylaw 10... Sec. 1) Foreword Pupils (both domestic and foreign) at any grade level shall not be recruited to a member school of the KHSAA for the purpose of participating in athletics, including recruitment under the guise of academics Sec. 2) Definition Recruiting is defined as an act, on behalf of or for the benefit of, a school, which attempts to influence a student to transfer to a member school for the purpose of participating in athletics. A school official utilizing an intermediary, such as, but not limited to a peer, another school employee, a student, a parent or a citizen, for the purpose of recruiting a student athlete shall be in noncompliance.
January 26, 200818 yr I don" think that blatant " recruting " occurs in either public or private schools . The recruting that I see are mostly things like grade school nights where grade school students get in free at certain high School sports events and get a ticket for a free drink . Or an open house at your school where the community is invited to tour the school and look at the facilities and programs . The only blatant act of recruting that I have personally witnessed , and I was there when the coversation took place , occured when a public School coach in NKY told a private school student at a winter sports tournament that if they would enroll the following year at the public school then that student would not only be on their particular team but would start , and this kids father loved to brag about it. The kid was between their soph and junior years and had made the freshman team but had been in the last cut on the JV as a soph and ended up as a team statistician . The kid did leave and did start in their junior and senior years at the public school . Now before they transfered their child the parents asked the coach at the private school if the player in question had a chance to make the team in their junior year and were told that it would be a waste of the kids time to even try out . I know for a fact that the players on the private school team loved to play against this particular player and test that player's skills in games between the two schools from then on . The kid wasn't a standout by any stretch of the imagination but it worked out for the best for the student because they got to play a sport that they loved .
