I'm all for gun ownership but I think something gets missed in the 2nd amendment

You've got a point here. Nearly every able bodied man was a militia man in the days when the Bill of Rights were written. They were asked to grab their weapon, which most all owned, and be on the ready when needed. The "people" it's talking about in the second sentence are militia members, security forces. At least it sounds to me that's what it meant, the way it's written.

I've always said this amendment could have been written with more clarity.

All firearms should be registered and test-fired for ballistics matching. Persons convicted of a crime with a firearm and certain other violent crimes should be prohibited from owning or carrying a firearm. All other adults should have unrestricted access to most firearms, including automatic weapons.

I've never really understood why anyone would need a military assault rifle, with a clip that shoots a zillion rounds, around their house anyway, when a shotgun is probably the best defense weapon one could have to begin with. Plus, wouldn't it take someone who knows what they're doing (a little required training) to operate some of these assault weapons. And where does it end with type of weapons... are we allowed to own shoulder held rocket launchers or bazookas?

We have a fully automatic AR-15/M-16, AK-47, and SKS.

 

It is not cheap to own...........and not smart to just start shooting.

There's another issue with weapons, that you didn't bring up, so I will. Weapons security is very important. Doubly or triply so for automatic weapons. I'm actually ok with the current process for obtaining automatic weapons. You'd like to know that the person you license is a responsible person. I worked with a guy who owns an M-60. As others have said, the process is both expensive and tedious. It should probably remain so.

That's in the "Bad-attitudes".

That is not what I am saying. The current policy restricts ALL felons from owning a gun. Not all felonies, by a long shot, are violent crimes.

 

So its alright for every Tom, Dick and Harry to own a shotgun, rifle or pistol, but not an automatic weapon? Where's the logic in that?

 

So then, if someone is convicted of trafficking heroin, it would be okay for them to still carry a gun? Trafficking is not, in and of itself, a violent crime. Pretty simple policy currently exists, in my opinion - you want the right to carry a firearm? Don't commit a felony. That way the legislators and courts don't have to involve themselves in the comlicated and impossible task of deciding which felony violations are acceptable to commit and still carry a firearm and which ones aren't.

 

As far as why there is - and should be - a difference in citizens having a right to carry fully automatic vs. not fully automatic weapons, I think I addressed it (or at least tried to ). Fully auto weapons are a vastly different animal from single shot/semi-auto weapons.

I personally believe that if someone has served their entire sentence for a crime, all citizen's rights should be returned to them. At least for a first offense. I believe everyone should get a 2nd chance. But that's for another thread.

I believe there are crimes for which you forever forfeit some of your "rights". Your "rights" (owning a weapon, voting, driving, etc..) are actually privileges and you give up these privileges if you cannot abide by the laws and rules of our society.

Like I said much earlier, I proably wouldn't allow violent criminals to own firearms. And I'd be willing to bet that every person on BGP has failed to abide by the laws and rules of our society at some time during their life.
