Cartoon mocking LCA and LexCath

Featured Replies

After seeing Wilson Spears villianified for a stance that others don't agree with you, I can see his/her reasoning.

Perhaps, but if they're too scared to put their name on it, they aren't much of a journalist, and they make the profession look bad (regardless of the topic of the cartoon).

I don't know who the author is but here are two people that are involved in disseminating the cartoon (and this is assuming their email addresses were not spoofed):

Steve Cornelius [email protected]

and

Greg Scholl [email protected]

Imagine that both are from the Somerset area.

Sounds about right. :irked:

None of you private school supporters are appalled that they were cheating, but you all are ready to execute some poor cartoon writer??? Go figure.

Please find where I said I wasn't appalled, I daresay you're not going to find it. If you are going to call someone out do it directly. This is like me saying "All of you public school supporters want to lynch every private school based on hearsay, unsubstatiated rumors, and malicious misninformation. It is discriminatory and unbecoming of Americans in our modern era." For what it is worth I am not calling you out specifically on the aforementioned attitude, I would have named you in there were that the case.

I don't say things like that to those of you who support the public schools, because while I know that that are individuals who fall into that category I will call them out directly when I deign them to be worth the trouble. However such blatant ignorance is rarely worth it.

Cheating is cheating and violations are violations, any violations that are found by the KHSAA should be punished. I admit I think that a ban from postseason play should be enforced depending on the severity of recruiting violations.

Was this case ( LCA ) worthy of a play-off ban ?

That's a bunch of baloney. Numerous private supporters on here have criticized what LCA did. I posted that I have directly heard private school coaches and AD's that are very upset with LCA's actions.

I am not familiar with how the editorial cartoon business works, so I will have to rely on your knowledge for the answer to this question. Could a regular Joe Schmoe draw the cartoon and submit it to newspaper without wanting to be a journalist?

The news-papers editorial artist draws the pictures for the paper. That does not mean it is his idea. The paper can choose to use this topic( private vs public ) as its editorial for the day and asked him to render a comic to go with it. Based on his drawing, however, it seems he pays attention to the current events going on in the state.

I think that you will find that most private school supporters have called for a zero tolerance policy on cheating. In fact the private schools were the ones that tried to get a better enforcement arm of the KHSAA but the public schools voted that down.

None of you public school supporters were appalled when that proposal was voted down and yet you are ready to condemn the KHSAA because the punishment wasn't harsh enough??? Go figure.

Wow I can paint with a broad brush too.

I have never seen a legitimate newspaper cartoonist that didn't sign his/her work regardless of the topic or whose "idea it was".

Was this cartoon published in a newspaper?

As I have said before. I am against any sort of split. I think the KHSAA already has enough power in its by-laws to address violations. No special proposal needed.

I guess my point in this matter is not defending LC or even LCA (you can't), but to have all the Privates put in the same category (The Private School Sports Store), when clearly that is not the case. If it had read the LCA & LexCath sport store, then I wouldn't be so upset. It would be like me claiming that all Public Schools have crooks on their basketball teams because one team did last year. Did one team have a bunch of crooks on the team? Sure they did, but you can't be so general in your comments by saying all Public School have criminals on their basketball team, just because one team did....

My feeling is this cartoon is fairly funny; you can't take high school athletics too seriously. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy supporting high school athletics. The fact someone felt like poking fun at the privates in Lexington is OK. I really like the "have it your way" reference. Their trophies are safely on display and the rings are ordered or already on their fingers.

At least age hasn't been as much of a hot topic in recent years. That was the one issue that led to the humble beginnings of the KHSAA.

Did Highlands have to reimburse the KHSAA portion of legal wranglings over the young man's eligibility struggles a few years back in football? Was Highlands able to have the KHSAA reverse their decison to make them forfeit all but two games that season?

and they are not sharing....

At times I believe the KHSAA provides sketchy, incomplete information (as in their official release on the LCA issues) just so they can watch this forum go nuts...

"By letter dated January 6, 2005, Mr. Hall directed his request to KHSAA Commissioner Brigid DeVries. As clarified by Mr. Hall: “That’s the survey in which the KHSAA sought, among other things, information on financial aid dispensed to varsity athletes compared to financial aid dispensed to the student body as a whole.” On February 7, 2005, Mr. Hall submitted his request to Theodore R. Martin, KHSAA legal counsel, to whom he was referred, advising him that Commissioner DeVries had indicated “even though four or five of the 46 non-public schools had yet to respond, she was willing to share the available information” with The Courier-Journal. In closing, Mr. Hall observed that his request was not for “a summary of the information for all Kentucky schools [ ], but a school-by-school response from the 46 non-public schools, as close to the example as possible.”

In a response dated February 10, 2005, Mr. Martin denied the The Courier Journal’s request on behalf of the KHSAA. “Without conceding the issue of whether the KHSAA is subject to the provisions of the [Open Records Act],” the KHSAA responded, in relevant part, as follows:..."

"In this case, the KHSAA Commissioner, Brigid L. DeVries, has undertaken a study of the financial aid given to students at KHSAA member schools. The study, as proposed and conducted, is a long-term project. The first step in the process is to obtain basic information concerning financial aid and general enrollment for students in private high schools. Further steps will then be taken to gather information as to all KHSAA member schools concerning financial aid. "
