HOMELESS CAMEL
Thirty-five years after the Supreme Court legalized abortion in the U.S., abortion rates are at their lowest level in three decades - which gives both sides in the culture wars something to celebrate and plenty to fight over, while the rest of us try to figure out what happened. According to the Guttmacher Institute's 2005 survey of abortion providers, the abortion rate fell 9% in five years, to 19.4 abortions for every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44; the 1.2 million abortions performed in 2005 numbered 25% fewer than the high of 1.6 million in 1990. That would seem to be good news, whether you view abortion as an evil, or a necessary evil, or a routine medical procedure no more morally troubling than a tooth extraction. http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20080122/us_time/whyhaveabortionratesfallen
cshs81
Speculation is that is a combination of higher cost for the abortion, higher incarceration rates for young males, and more birth control options.
rockmom
There is also a trend toward celibacy.
mcpapa
Some might argue that sex education in the schools has helped. Maybe people are just becoming more responsible.
Jim Schue
Some might argue that sex education in the schools has helped... By "sex education," you mean the lack thereof, right? Because an endless mantra of "abstinence-only" doesn't really educate anyone about anything. It just says no.
Hearsay
Heck, you get a check from the government for each baby you pop and there's no social stigma anymore for giving birth out of wedlock.
Hearsay
I'm sorry, that was callous, unfeeling an un-called for. I'm having a bad day, and I vented. Apologies here to anyone offended.

By sex education of abstinence-only, they may mean the ONLY program that 100% for sure, guaranteed, prevents pregnancies unless you are a teenager named Mary around 0 BC in the Middle East just got visited by an angel. The rest you hope it works.

Here's where we probably disagree: Programs that ONLY promote abstinency and that do not review safe, effective means of contraception are NOT effective. "Just say no" in and of itself borders on being worthless. IMHO.
