All A Classic Criteria?

The more I think about it, I bet there aren't 10 schools in the state whose enrollment has RISEN enough to knock them out of the tournament.

Name someone besides Lexington Catholic.

Trigg Co. use to be in and they are out now. Also, Webster Co. use to be in but now that Providence shut down and those kids go to Webster they are out.

Is it going to be the smallest 125 school in top 3 grades based on the prior year enrollment according to KDE? So would that mean the 2008 KDE numbers will be used to determine the field for 2009? Does any consideration go into the fact some schools are all boys or all girls? Seems an all boy school or all girl school that would fall into the smallest 125 would have a big advantage over a small school that is coed. This could also go for a school that has alot more girls or boys in their school. If a school has 2-1 boys to girls or girls to boys this should be considered also.

It would make more since to have the smallest 125 schools based on the number of boys (for the boys field) or the number of girls (for the girl field) in grade 9-12 since that is whom primarily is playing on these teams.

There are very few all boys or all girls schools. I'm sure the numbers are adjusted for them. Do ANY of them compete in the All "A" Classic.

Heath was in it until 2005, then in 2006 was out of it, then back in last year and now back out for the 2008 season. With the new rule of lowest 125 they will be back in for next year.

Recap for Heath

1990-2005 in

2006 out

2007 in

2008 out

2009 back in

West Carter

Jackson County was too big when the tournament began. They jumped in for a few years, but they aren't a Class A school. I think they are 3A in football.

Webster County is out after the consolidation with Providence. Mercy Academy won a pair of girls' titles in the 1990s. Owen County has been out of the 8th region for a few years. Washington County is too big in the 5th. Jackson County in the 13th. West Carter in the 16th. They all have outgrown the All-A in recent years.

This is the first Year Owen is out, they had 3-4 students too many. Henry Co. also out grew the all A in the 8th region. If they numbers do not change I think Carroll and one other might be out the next year with a couple over.

Maybe it is just a few areas that have declining population. But overall that is the reason it has shrunk.

The tournament is dwindling to very low numbers with the current cut-offs, many schools are out one year and back the next.

It will not mean anything if you have just 4 teams in your region. Most schools have some growth year after year. So the tournament would not exist after a certain amount of time.

I am sure Touchstone has looked at the numbers and realizes that to maintain the reputation of the tournament they need to have a good number of teams participate.

Until they create classes in Basketball this is all many of these schools have.

This statement is just wrong on both points?? First the tourney since it's statewide expansion has had in the vicinity of 110-125 teams, and last year had 119 if I'm not mistaken--Hardly "dwindling to very low numbers" as this represents approximately 40-45% of the teams playing hoops in KY. Secondly, there's always a few schools that move in & out of the tourney, some by choice; but "many in one year and out the next" is an exaggeration.

On the qualification numbers--It's always been 425 or less in grades 10-12 for co-ed schools (single sex schools 1/2 that). The new rules call for the smallest 125 schools (again single sex schools' enrollments must be doubled) in grades 9-12, as few 10-12 high schools still exist.

I don't agree with picking 125 schools every year, but I'm glad they are using 9-12 numbers instead of 10-12.

Why do we not have a 2A, 3A, etc. tournament as well?

I've never liked basing the numbers on the top 3 grades.

Almost all of the 2A teams are already in the All "A" Classic.

If you tried to have six state tournaments like football, you would have some regions without teams in certain classes.

Thanks for the info.

When do they determine and notify the smallest 125 schools? If one of those schools elect not to participate do they keep going until they have 125 schools in the tourny or do they just notify the smallest 125 and however many of those school participate determine the number in the field.

Can anyone provide a link to where the numbers are pulled from?
