All A Classic Criteria?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the enrollment criteria used for the All A Classic?

From the beginning, it's been 425 students in the top three grades ... that's what the cutofff for Class A football was when the tournament went statewide nearly 20 years ago.

Next year, the smallest 125 schools in the state are eligible to compete in the tournament.

The cutoff number has been 425 in the top 3 grades since the tournament went statewide in 1990, but I have been told by an AD that the number was going to be raised to 495 in the top 3 grades in the near future. IMO, if this is true, they're going in the wrong direction. The figure should be lowered, if anything.

I completely agree.. When the small class A teams have to compete with the larger 2A teams such as NCC, Newport, Holy Cross, and even the likes of St. Henry it's very tough for one of the smaller schools to make it to the finals, or even win... well said professor :thumb:

The tournament is dwindling to very low numbers with the current cut-offs, many schools are out one year and back the next.

It will not mean anything if you have just 4 teams in your region. Most schools have some growth year after year. So the tournament would not exist after a certain amount of time.

I am sure Touchstone has looked at the numbers and realizes that to maintain the reputation of the tournament they need to have a good number of teams participate.

Until they create classes in Basketball this is all many of these schools have.

That is not true. The new way will be the smallest 125 schools each year. They use the enrollment figures from the KDE. It will be done on one year contracts so some schools could bounce back and forth in the tournament.

Overall enrollment numbers have dropped for much of the state, and several regions have always had four or five teams. I'm sure it means just as much to win those regions to the teams winning them.

The more I think about it, I bet there aren't 10 schools in the state whose enrollment has RISEN enough to knock them out of the tournament.

Name someone besides Lexington Catholic.

Is it going to be the smallest 125 school in top 3 grades based on the prior year enrollment according to KDE? So would that mean the 2008 KDE numbers will be used to determine the field for 2009? Does any consideration go into the fact some schools are all boys or all girls? Seems an all boy school or all girl school that would fall into the smallest 125 would have a big advantage over a small school that is coed. This could also go for a school that has alot more girls or boys in their school. If a school has 2-1 boys to girls or girls to boys this should be considered also.

It would make more since to have the smallest 125 schools based on the number of boys (for the boys field) or the number of girls (for the girl field) in grade 9-12 since that is whom primarily is playing on these teams.

Just wondering, why isn't Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL) not playing in the tournament this year? Has their enrollment grown too much?

I guess I was misinformed.

The new plan sounds okay to me. I hadn't heard that one.

You make some valid points. But how many class A schools in Kentucky are all boys or all girls? I wouldn't think there are very many.

Christian Academy of Louisville appears to be gone for good. Trigg County and Heath are currrently on the outside looking in.

I do not know either. Maybe that is why it is not considered. However, if you are going to start using the smallest 125 schools then you should start considering the smallest schools by boys and girls. It would be unfair to have a school with 500 students (200 boys and 300 girls) not have the boys team be included in the tourny when a school with 450 students (250 boys and 200girls) have the boys team get invited based on a total enrollment of students.

Maybe the adminstrative burden place on the All A Organization is not worth the time.

Webster County is out after the consolidation with Providence. Mercy Academy won a pair of girls' titles in the 1990s. Owen County has been out of the 8th region for a few years. Washington County is too big in the 5th. Jackson County in the 13th. West Carter in the 16th. They all have outgrown the All-A in recent years.
