Someone else mentioned Johnson Central as being a team that they MIGHT play in the Rax Bowl (first open date). Anyone else heard this? Breathitt, Hazard, Lynn Camp, Somerset, Middlesboro and Johnson Central is a pretty good schedule. I don't know anything about Powell, Estill and Fleming....But this is still a pretty good first year schedule.

Again, not the same team. Somerset and Harlan Independent played in the same Class A district.

 

The new Harlan County High School is a combination of Cawood, Cumberland and Evarts only - not Harlan Independent. The Somerset game is a return trip from the Cawood schedule.

Everyone I know keeps adding Harlan Independent into the consolidation. I think the new schools name (HCHS) just adds to the confusion for most people right now. They hear Harlan and assume Harlan, I guess.

That's probably true. A lot of people have no clue about Kentucky geography or that Cawood, Evarts and Cumberland are in Harlan County. Whenever Harlan travels, I often hear them referred to as Harlan County. Cumberland used to always be called Cumberland County at the state All "A" Classic.

My mistake. I knew the game was being taken from the Cawood schedule but I guess I got the schools that were being consolidated mixed up.

I think that the end is getting close for hiring a new coach. I would guess that by the end of this week we should have someone named...

 

Would Larkey from Rockcastle Co. be a good fit?

Scatbackskin, absolutely Larkey would be a GREAT hire but I don't know if we could be that lucky to have a great coach like that come to Harlan County. Could you imagine what Larkey could do with 125 kids to choose from not counting Freshman. Oh the possiblities.

Whoever the coach is they had better be ready to win right away! If the majority of people in Harlan have the same expectations that the people on this message board do.

I think Larkey would be outstanding if Harlan County could land him. What he has built at the Rock is amazing. He turned that program around. Before Larkey you never really heard of Rockcastle and now I would guess they have the number one program in the mountains. Hasn't Larkey beat Bell something like 7 out of the last 10 games.

Pretty sure Larkey was an assistant at Cawood in the early 80's with Cullivan and lived in Harlan for several years before going to Rockcastle.

Yes that is correct. Larkey is a wonderful coach who gets the most out of his players. Although they had a run of some terrific talent for a while. He would indeed be a good hire for Harlan Co. He would get them going in the right direction by being competitive rather quickly.

I knew it was something to that affect. Anytime you can beat Bell you have done something. The have an outstanding program.
