Leslie has requested home and home JV and Freshman games for next season as soon as a coach is named. It was hard to get games with Cumberland and Evarts for freshman and JV. Should be alot easier with the big school. There are not alot of schools around that have Freshman games. Bell, Knox, Rock, South and North, Letcher Central, Clay, and A few others are all you can really get Freshman games with. Just glad its close to us.[/quote

 

If you have Bell, Knox, Letcher, Leslie, Corbin, North, South, Lee High, Clay, and Maybe a Lynn Camp. That would be 10 Freshmen games off the top of my head. Then the schools that may not have enough for a Freshmen team usually will play a JV team with a combo of players. I really don't see a problem with having a 10 game Freshmen and 10 game JV schedule for next year but I guess we will just have to wait and see. A lot of teams in Tenn. will play a Freshmen and JV conference with a playoff and the whole 9 yards.

This maybe something that the bigger schools around this area might want to look at for the coming year. I can see some real positives with a conference and playoff system if for nothing else to create some excitement and give the younger kids something to achieve while they are working to contribute on the varsity in the coming years.

Lungbuster you seem to know a lot about the subject. Maybe you could tell us all who the coach of HC will be?

I have known in the past that Bell always has a hard time getting a 10 game JV and freshman schedule completed with cancellations by other teams. Not sure about this year? But maybe they could play a home at home every year? Not much travel involved.

I have just heard the same rumors as everyone else. I have no inside information as far as the coach or anything else to be honest. I am just a community member who wants the school to exceed in all areas.

Wideopen, I talked to someone very close to the situation last night and he told me that Harlan County will name their coach Feb. 4th. He said that they had a coach but he would not go into detail as to why they were waiting until Feb. 4th. He just told me that everything is looking great for Harlan County football and the kids and the community will really appreciate and be excited about the hire.

It is my understanding that Harlan County will open up on the road

in the KickOff Classic at Green County on the 29th of August. Not

for sure whom the oppoent will be but to my understanding that

Hazard as well as Anderson were originaly slated to play Green but for

some reason decided back out of verbal agreements. So I am not sure

If Harlan will play Green or someone else. I would just like to see some

great football and I know this bowl has had some teams that could play

in the last few years. Evarts played there last year and were a very

impressive team. Not for sure who the other teams are but just heard

today that Harlan will play someone at Green.

Harlan Co. will be loaded at the RB position next season. I think they will have the best depth at RB in the region.

Will be looking forward to the Lee High game this year, I am anxious to see how good these boys from Harlan County are.

I wouldn't look past Lee. They've defeated Cawood several times in recent seasons.

 

Cumberland was a state runner-up three times.

Cawood advanced to the final four in 3A once.

Evarts advanced to the final four in 1A once.

Lynch should be considered in this argument, they consolidated with Cumberland in about 1980. Count them, and things change a bit. This could also be the reason these schools don't have as much playoff: They got beat by Lynch, like everybody else did. Also, Cawood didn't exist until the mid 60's or so.

I think Cumberland beat Lynch a few times during those glory days.:thumb:

Lynch won four state championships and was runner-up four times. Lynch and Harlan were the only Class A teams in the county during much of that time. Cumberland and Evarts were in 2A until the late 1970s. Lynch closed in 1981.

Thank you HDE. Evarts and Cumberland had to deal with Corbin and Middlesboro every year. This also shows how much population this county had lost during this time. That's what happens when a state turns it's back on a region, but I won't get into that. The point is, add Lynch to it, and things change drastically.
