Juniors playing J.V.

Featured Replies

A student is eligible from 8th -12th grade for varsity competition--5 years or 10 semesters .Don't know if there's different rules on cross country or not but it does apply to basketball .

I'm not sure about your 5 years or 10 semesters. In KY I don't believe there is a maximum number of years or semesters. I've seen several 7th graders playing varsity over the years. Look at some of the record holders and I think you will find that some played from the 7th grade up.

I know a couple of years ago Tates Creek had a large Senior class, and I remember their coach telling the LCA coaches in a JV game that many of his juniors wouldn't get much playing time if they didn't play JV. I have no problem if the juniors are getting little playing time at the varsity level.

That isn't the rule.

c) No student having been enrolled in the fourth (4th) grade

or in any grade through twelfth (12th) shall be eligible for

interscholastic athletics at the high school level (grades 9

through 12) for more than a total of one (1) year in each grade

and applicable eligibility shall begin in the fi rst year enrolled

in that grade. Students repeating a grade for any reason are

ineligible to participate in interscholastic athletics at the high

school level (grades 9 through 12) during the second year in

that grade. The penalty for violation of this rule shall be the loss

of one of the four years of eligibility after being promoted from

grade nine (9). Policies regarding the participation of repeating

students at the levels of play below high school interscholastic

athletics shall be determined by the school council pursuant to

KRS 160.345 (2) (i).

d) Pupils in grades 1-8 may play on the high school team if such

participation is not in confl ict with Section © above, and the

time so played shall not be counted on the eight (8) semester

limit. EXCEPTION: Students below grade nine (9) may not

participate on the varsity team in contests in the sports of

football or soccer, and students enrolled below grade seven

(7) may not participate on the varsity level in wrestling. The

provisions of this restriction shall not apply to non-varsity teams

participating in these sports.

What's your opinion on playing Juniors on the J. V . ?

Well, the J in J.V. is for junior. That kind of spells it out pretty clearly to me on this one.

I believe there are two seperate instances. One for contact sports and another for non contact. I may be wrong, but I believe there is a rule for football.

By rule I have no problem with it, but to me there are very few instances where a junior who is not good enough to play varsity will improve that much to be a contributor the next year. It also takes away from sophmores who may in two years, with some work, be ready to play varsity. Now if you are going to keep a junior on the JV team they should be a starter or play alot of minutes, don't have them sit on the bench because how are they going to improve without playing in game situations.

Way wrong. 4 years once you are promoted from 8th grade. That is why you have seen several kids become ineligible their senior year the last few years, such as Haddix from Scott Co. As was stated earlier, you can start playing high school basketball in 4th grade. Recently, 7th graders have played varsity. OJ Mayo is the big name that played in 7th grade for Rose Hill, and I believe Euton and Jackson played in 7th grade for Rose Hill as well.

Most Juniors like that have either been cut or will quit.

You are probably correct but we were told by the KHSAA that a kid would be eligible to play basketball 10 semesters from the 8th through the 12th grade. I know there are different eligibilities for different sports. I remember Mayo playing in the 7th and that probably Dakota and Chad played in the 7th too but don't know that for sure. :ylsuper:

Good point. If you have loaded senior class, and the juniors are good as well, and will be carrying the load next year, then they must get that playing time that they wouldn't if they had to sit behind seniors.
