Juniors playing J.V.

Featured Replies

I believe there are two seperate instances. One for contact sports and another for non contact. I may be wrong, but I believe there is a rule for football.

I think this has to left up to the varsity coach, after all jv is used to prepare the kid for the following year, an if he can't help as a Jr it will be hard to help as a Sr unless you are at a large school

I think Juniors play J.V. is perfectly fine i know her is Owsley County all the juniors they have paly J.V. but they only have 3 juniors.

When kids take the 8th grade twice and aren't demoted, then they are ineligible to play varsity in the 8th grade. I think this is correct.

Keep trying to prove that I said something wrong at some point, it wont happen.

So the issue is not JRs on JV but , rather, a poor decision by a coach.

We haven't even taken into consideration that you may have a JR who didn't play much, if at all, as a SOPH due to injury. Do you simply cut them because they're JRs and won't start varsity? Hell no. You use JV to get them ready for varsity.

I agree with this statement and agree in principle that juniors can play JV, but I state once again that if your going to keep a junior to play on the JV to get ready for next next year play them don't sit them.

Example- If a boy has played JV for two 1/2 years and has not shown any improvement in those 2 and 1/2 years and knows he is not going to play any varsity ball as a senior. He's taking playing time away from younger boys with a lot of ability and they're sitting on the bench. How do you feel about this situation.

No argument from me.

You use JV to get your freshman and sophomores ready for varsity. IMO.

What if you have 6 seniors and 5 juniors?

Way wrong. 4 years once you are promoted from 8th grade. That is why you have seen several kids become ineligible their senior year the last few years, such as Haddix from Scott Co. As was stated earlier, you can start playing high school basketball in 4th grade. Recently, 7th graders have played varsity. OJ Mayo is the big name that played in 7th grade for Rose Hill, and I believe Euton and Jackson played in 7th grade for Rose Hill as well.
4 consectutive years after being promoted to the 9th grade.

Unless they are not good enough and will not be good enough! Then come their Senior year they ride the pine all year and their parents complain that the younger players get more time than they do. Then the coach might give some time to the Seniors just because they are Seniors instead of playing and developing the younger players in certain situations.

I agree!

If a junior is not good enough to see the floor in a varsity game, cut them!

They will not suddenly get better by their Senior year.

...then just like I said previously, you have a coach problem - not a player problem.

Wow. I guess you guys didn't see the 2004 State semi-finalists from Park Hills. Their #1 ace in the hole jack of all trades Greg "Erp" Erpenbeck played some JV as a JR. If Coach L had lived by your code then he may not have gotten out of the 9th region tourney.

Coaches that live by a hard and fast rule like you suggest don't last long nor should they.

I don't see a problem with it. I don't like to see a player who starts varsity or is the first off the bench play JV. It is "Junior"Varsity:D
