Substitution Question

Featured Replies

While the bench "MIGHT" get some good quality time on the floor, most of the time it's all about making the score look better. I believe it's cheap and unproductive to leave your starters in just to make the score look better in the papers. Everyone looks at the line scores anyway. Very seldom does either team get anything out of it. It's painful to coach, play, referee, and watch those kind of 4th quarters.

Not knowing the whole situation in this thread I think there are a lot of questions but unfortunately I think sometimes you are right, it's just to try and run up some points or to make it look closer. If I can't press their starters, what good is it going to do for me to press their second team.

I think if you have a young team and want to put the starters back in to work on their press then they should do it. The winning team can always put their starters in. Some teams have no one to play against at practice to get better at this and this might be the opportunity. Work for the future.

Maybe those kids just played 20 minutes out of 24 in a JV game. You are going to give the JV 28 minutes (20 minutes in JV and 8 in the V) for the night while the varsity starters have only played 20 some of the first 24 V minutes??

Not too many kids getting playing time if 5 are playing the whole JV game and 5 are playing the whole V game. Sounds like this program is in trouble. Not sure how realistic that is? Do we know this to be the situation?

The idea of giving your team experience in applying a press sounds good, but lets face it, if the game's outcome is already out of the question, why does Team B wait until Team A clears its benches. Practice the press against some real competition - namely the starters from Team A. This is the way a varsity team gets better, not by beating up on basically a JV team. Sounds to me like Coach B wants to take advantage of a much weaker squad (and the kindness of the Team A coach) to make the score a lot closer than it should be.

Yes, Coach A could put his starters in, but this risks injury to them. Also Coach A probably doesn't want to put his starters in because he too wants to play his 2nd and 3rd stringers. The press of Team B doesn't allow for this.

One last thing - If Coach B had been pressing a lot of the game then I have no problem with continuing it on the subs. Coach B is just continuing with his original gameplan. But to apply it to team A's subs only, when part of Coach A's reasoning is to show some mercy, to me seems bush league. Again, JMO.

Could be,l for example we have 12 girls on our Varsity team, 6 that do not play JV and 6 JV players. Our JV team consists of 9 girls so most of the 6 core JV players receive most of the minutes in JV.. so I can understand exactly what she means. Our Varsity starts a Fresh, Soph, 2 juniors and a senior so they are still young enough to get good experience by practicing against any team.

On a side note, basketball's a cut sport...be thankful you're on the team...

Thats true

I have no problem with Team B throwing on a little press late in the game when they are down by 20 or more just as long as they don't mind me running my starters back into the game so I can remind the other coach that we could probably have beaten them by 40 and will do so in the future.

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner!!!

Kind of an unwritten rule. Don't wait until my subs come in to throw on the press. If you want to press, press my starters.

2 words, as Intentional Foul stated: BUSH LEAGUE!!!!

I have been told a bunch of unwritten rules in the last 18 years, never heard of this one before.

Like I said earlier, I would want them to press and let my 2nd team learn. I do not want my 2nd team go out there and spend 8 minutes not having to play defense or be able to go down there and throw 1 pass and get easy, open shots. That does nothing but teach them very bad habits.

The 2nd team learns what it's like to play against a first team's press in practice. They face it every day. Can't imagine you have never heard that pressing the lower reserves when you have yet to press the whole game & the other coach calls off the dogs in the 4th quarter is bush league. To me, that is no different than a coach who runs up the score on a lesser opponent by pressing the entire game.

What benefit does your team gain by pressing only the reserves other than the GIFT of saying that you lost by 15 rather than 30???? Now, if we are talking 1st through 3rd quarters and you are pressing regardless of who is in, that is different. No complaint there. But, the same coach who presses only when the other coach calls off the dogs will scream that the other coach is classless if he never pulls his starters and beats his team the way they could. I've seen it happen first hand. Listened to a coach complain before a game about how classless another coach was by not playing his reserves and scoring 100 points on his team and beating them by 40 points. During our game, we are up 30 early in the 4th and started subbing to show some class and not demoralize the kids and what does that coach do?? Starts pressing our JV & middle schoolers after not pressing the whole game. We won by around 15 and just sat there and shook our heads at the coach while he frantically coached his team in the press. BUSH!!!!

Thank you ....my thoughts exactly....and I don't want to hear other parents complain about their JV player not getting Varsity time!! :thumb:
