2008 Trinity

Forgive me my ignorance but being in Western Ky puts me out of the loop a bit. Who are the top contenders for the qb spot and maybe some personal analysis?

I believe the 'Rocks will have a representative squad next year. The ascendant QB (Cameron Smith (sp) ) has been described by Coach Beatty as "gritty." I take that to be a compliment. They have Phillips and Xavier Lee (5'9" 185#) as runners and should have a good receiving corps. Two good linemen in Kupper and Robey will need to be replaced as will a good LB in Weitlauf. They have Jordan Whiting coming back at ILB. If I'm not mistaken, there are at least a couple of starters returning on the O line.

They open at Bowling Green, then Butler , then Cincy St. X, so there will be a baptism of fire. They may be 1-2 after three games but if the team learns from it, so what? I hope by game six or seven, they will be rounding into shape.

^ There really couldn't be a better synopsis at this stage of the 2008 season.

^ Did they have facemasks then :D

I don't think they had facemasks or front teeth. LOL

I believe the player's name is Xavier Thomas, not Lee (of FSU). I apologize for the brain flatulence.

I think I felt alot better when Xavier Lee was going to be playing....although I'm not quite sure how we'd get around the KHSAA on that one. :D

Good job.............as usual your insightful best. :thumb::thumb:

Current Jr Cam Smyth is the leader going into the spring. He is the son of '79 grad Mike Smyth and is a very good athlete. If he doesn't earn the nod at QB , he will play at receiver and/or safety. He is currently listed at 5'11" and 170. He played well at the JV level and has a great grasp of the offense. He needs more accuracy from what I witnessed at practice.

There are a couple of current freshmen who could give Smyth some competition at signal-caller. Kragthorpe and Frederick both were up and down. I believe Kragthorpe is slightly more polished throwing the boy. Frederick is more of a grind it out, passing well enough to move the ball. He is a better runner and could play another position much easier than Kragthorpe. There were some issues with lack of numbers of linemen at the frosh level last season, but the skill people were there. The freshmen lost several close games.

The bottom line is the cupboard is not bare at Rock Heaven.

So the rumors of Trinity's demise have been greatly exagerrated?

Does Trinity have their scrimmages set for 2008?

For the last few years, Trinity has scrimmaged Lexington Catholic and Scott County. Whether this continues for this year, I don't know. It is my impression that T does not really care about keeping score in scrimmages (real football) or even less in 7-on-7 (not real football but useful for repititions). It seems they like for the kids to be able to learn without the pressure of trying to win-------that comes later during the season.

What about sophomore QBs Wes Jackson and James Ryan? They are definitly in the running for QB also.

I only have 34 years. Back to the topic.

You became Trinity supporter in Kindergarten?

As far as Coach Beatty goes, he's not going to make everyone happy. Of course, Coach Lampley received grief while he was winning 50 games in a row.

I knew I wanted to be a Rock in the second grade at St. Vincent dePaul, some 39 years ago.:dancingpa

First game attended: Trinity 44 Manual 0 in 1973.

At least you get good seats when St. Xavier and Trinity hook up.:D

Coach Beatty spoke at Our Lady of Lourdes the other night for 75 minutes. And then hung around for another hour answering any question put to him.

As long as he stays this excited to be the head man at Trinity, the Shamrocks are in good shape.

As a fan and witness to many practices and games, I honestly feel they will be more helpful elsewhere on the field. Jackson played some DE this year, right? He looked good doing it. Smyth did get most of the reps at QB at the JV level.

Maybe these gentlemen will prove me wrong. If one of them performs better than Smyth and proves to be a better leader, then Trinity will be better for it.

I was at many practices also, and I don't believe Jackson played any DE. But I could be wrong.

I don't think there is any reason to believe Kragthorpe would be ahead of Jackson on the depth chart. Jackson knows the offense and has more overall skill.
