Mack The Knife Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 The Wildcats played the final 3 quarters without leading scorer Trent Maddox who suffered a lacerated chin in a fall to the floor and had to receive stitches. However, his teammates stepped up and kept within reach until the final 3 minutes. Ryle ended the game on a 12-2 run. Jared Carlton led Gallatin with 11 points. The Cats are now 13-4 and have 10 days off before they travel to Shelbyville on the 22nd.
cooperstown Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Good win for Ryle on a night when their outside shooting was practically non-existent. Saw a first for a call in basketball tonight. Late in game, Gallatin player drives hard to basket. Contact ensues and whistles blow (he makes basket). One ref calls blocking on Ryle and other calls charging on Gallatin (call could have gone either way). They discuss for a few seconds and end up calling football's version of off-setting penalties - fouls on both players, disallow basket, and call jump ball. Gallatin's coach gets fired up (understandably) and gets tech. Starts to break open what was a very close game to that point. Odd call.

I cant blame GC's coach for blowing his stack. Give him the bucket and a chance to get another point. What a wuss ref to not award the offensive play there. But it has to be called either way, you cant give two fouls and no basket. WOW.

Sounds like Gallatin got homered from the 9th region guys.
theoldcoach Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 The worst part of the whole call was the referee in the right position, under the basket, called the block, and the referee out of position came in and tried to over rule hime, as a result, neither ref would budge, so they called the double foul, waived off the basket and gave Ryle the ball. After the technical, the game was over. I think Gallatin's coach could have lived with either call if they make one of them, he might not have liked the call, but to over rule the official who was in the right place is absurd. It was an odd ending to a very poorly officiated game. There were two walk calls called while players were dribbling - one on Ryle and one on GC. Congrats to Ryle. They adjusted and won. Good win for them and nothing said against the refs is meant to slight there victory. They were the better team tonight under these circumstances.

It is a double foul, no points and go to the alternating possession. This is something you don't want to happen (a blarge - block/charge) and one of the officials should have sold the call and took charge of the situation. If neither didn't, the correct procedures were followed.

Very Bad Things Man :fire::fire::flame:

I can't agree with the out of position vs. in position ref statement. The play actually came out of the trail officials primary area and he can take the play all the way to the basket. This should have been discussed in the officials pregame. In cases like that the lead official (underneath basket) will follow the ball if there is a pass, the trail takes the crash. Although there wasn't a pass on the play I can see why the trail official would stay with the ball. Both officials should have held their call to see what the other had before signaling. However, as Madman stated the correct procedure was followed.

Ryle won the game and the played hard and have a nice young team, but as Mr. Athletics said Gallatin took a royal (typical) 9th region screwing. One of the refs would have been outclassed in a middle school game.

It's not a good call for anyone but it is the correct call if the refs can't agree. Maybe the officiating wasn't great but one call didn't beat Gallatin. It's tough for an 8th Region team to win in the 9th just like it's tough for a 9th Region team to win in the 8th. No matter what the call is, half the people are happy and half the people are mad.:jump::mad:

In fact Gallatin shot the bonus in both halves as compared to Ryle in the second half only. Were there calls that were missed, sure, as there is in every game. If the refs had both had the same call or if only one had made the call we wouldn't be having this discussion. Unfortunately it happens sometimes and their handling of the situation was correct.
Lunatic1 Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I hope Maddox is ok, he is very important to that GC team! GC had tough games back to back and I am sure that it showed. Congrats to Ryle. on your win!
theoldcoach Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Maddox is fine!! A couple of stitches and thats it.
