Ryle 53 Gallatin Co. 38

Featured Replies

Wow. I can't believe Gallatin lost by this much. One of the biggest shock's I've seen yet this year. Good win for Ryle, but hope Maddox and GC pulls together before the "All A."

I think you need to read your rulebook. In this situation, a double foul would be called, if the basket goes in - it counts, the shooter then gets one free throw (with the lane cleared), then you go to the alternating possession. If the basket did not go, the shooter shoots 2 shots (lane cleared), then goes to alternating possession at POI. Release point of the ball has no bearing on the play. Let's say player control was called by both officials.... If a player commits player control foul the shot is not counted regardless of release. Let's say both called a block in the act of shooting.... if the ball goes in it counts, again regardless of release, and if not he shoots two free throws.

Madman its funny you mention that I should read my rulebook. I also hope that you are not an official based on your above interpretation and just a fan like me who thinks he knows the rules.

So, based on your suggestion, I pulled out my trusty rulebook. Case 4.19.8 Situation C states the following.

Sitch: A1 drives for a try and jumps and releases the ball. Contact occurs between A1 and B1 AFTER the release and before airborne shooter A1 returns to the floor. One official calls a blocking foul on B1 and the other official calls a charging foul on A1. The try is successful. RULING: Even though the airborne shooter A1 committed a charging foul, it is not a player-control foul because the two fouls result in a double personal foul. The double foul does not cause the ball to become dead on the try and the goal is scored. Play is resumed at the point of interruption , which is a throw-in for Team B from anywhere along the endline.

Regardless of when the ball was released, FTs are never shot in this situation.

So, based on the above, I'll stand with my interpretation since it came directly from the rulebook. I've highlighted the parts of your answer that go against what the rulebook says.

I don't think that is necessarily true. The 8th Region don't even get invited.

Au contraire! The 8th has one of the top officials in the entire Commonwealth. He called the 2006 Sweet 16 Championship and has called the last to All 'A' Classic finals at Richmond.

Two of the state's Top 10 (Scott Co. and Holmes) and the top team in the 8th (Anderson Co.).

Bigger than Trimble over Walton at Walton? Or have you not seen many games Jeanie?

Sounds like some official's ego ran amuck and affected a good game that should have been decided by players from two great teams. I have no doubt that what theoldcoach said is true about the pregame "issues" that the official said was true...that should tell the story of the mindset of the official - trying to show that he was in control, regardless of what protocol/rules says.

As far as 8th vs. 9th region officials, I will agree that the 8th has some bad officials...but they have some good ones, too. One, Terry Coldiron calls the "A" in Richmond and the state tournament every year. Most of the time, when you play out of region, you aren't going to get the close calls, but that doesn't mean that officials should have an agenda before the game even starts.

I stand corrected. As I said earlier, Im just a fan who thinks he knows the rules. Thanks.

Part of the responsibility of the official and umpire for the game is to count the number of players on the floor during warmups. This information is used to determine the number of entries in the official scorebook (which is always the home teams book unless duly noted otherwise). If there were 10 players on the flor, for example, and 12 listed in the book, the official knows there is possibly a problem. At 10 minutes left in the pregame warmups, the official goes to the scorer table to check the official score book. The official is looking for names and numbers of the players to be clearly defined in the book for both teams. He underlines the last entry in book, and signs his name to it. This is to certify that all is good, and that if there are later any descrepancies found, a technical is administered against the team found to be in violation.

IF the official or umpire taunted a kid prior to the game starting, it clearly is out of the oridinary and should be reported to the KHSAA. At no time is a player on the team responsible, nor can be held responsible for the correct entries in the book. That is the head coaches responsibility ultimately. Again I say if these things are true and this official did these things, he should be stripped of his officiating responsibilities and reprimanded by the KHSAA.

I will assume that you were quoting me just to add to what I was saying...I have had, shall we say, some experience with keeping the official book. ;)

Just a question but why only two in stripes? Every HS basketball game that I have attended this year, has had three men in stripes for the Varsity games and that includes a game I saw at Ryle. BTW I totally agree that most of the Refs in the Ninth Region are really, really bad....

Yeah I know you have. Others on the site may not know what all the goings on in a game are for though, so I thought I would provide insite. No other intent than that.

Totally at the decision of the home school. They will tell the assigner for the games if they need 3 officials. If there is a big game, or a rival game, you can bet there will be three on the floor. In this case, Ryle must have thought two could handle it.

Welcome to the club.

My guess is that since we rarely see the blarge that all officials are not upto snuff on the intricacies of it. Not a good excuse but probably a reasonable explanation of how they misapplied it - assuming the account above is correct.
