Not Afraid to Speak His Mind: Meade County Coach, Larry Mofield

Featured Replies

Was it all about money last year when Ryle drilled Meade by an even bigger margin?

What was it that the Warren Central coach said to his team before the Sweet 16 game against Ryle in 2002? Something about Ryle having an advantage because they lived near the airport?

With the way that the classes are set up now, X and T will never be on the same side of the bracket. X's district/region is in the "western" half of 6A while T's district/region is in the "eastern" half of 6A.

Not true, statman.

X and T are in the 3rd and 5th districts in 6A respectively.

Look at the playoff pairings. While some classes keep 1,2,3,4 on the western side and 5,6,7,8 on the eastern side, that isn't true for 6A.

In 6A their rotation goes a little further. Look at 2008 and you'll see that the western side includes 1,2,3,5 and the eastern side has 4,6,7,8. That puts X and T both in the western side for 2008.

For 2009 and 2010, they are separated again.

Come on Toots, you are letting facts get in the way of emotion and hyperbole. You know that doesn't work in this forum.:thumb:

“I can’t say enough about our kids. It’s been an honor to coach our seniors,” Mofield added. “They were outstanding. They could have packed it up when they were 0-3 and instead, they reeled off 10 straight wins. I just wish I had a better game plan for tonight on offense to try to keep St. X from pinning their ears back and coming after us. But I can’t say enough about our kids because it’s been an honor for our coaching staff to get to coach these young men.”

Also from the article. Sounds like a pretty decent coach to me.

I have nothing but good things to say about the Meade County players, fans, and band. It was a class act that showed up at St. Xavier for the playoff game. What a show of community spirit. I truly believe community spirit and support is at the core of a successful high school football program. I am not naive enough to say that St. Xavier does not have advantages. The biggest advantage that some schools can not over come is the numbers. There are 1400 boys in the school with nearly a quarter of them participating in the football program. However, there are a lot of unfounded and perceived accusations of wrong doing that I do not believe are going on and have never been proven so.

I am not going to beat this coach up for his comments. What passion he has for his kids. I think he has fallen into the same unsubstantiated belief that St. Xavier must be doing some thing wrong because of their continued success. The only way for St. Xavier to overcome this it appears is to lose. If you are losing then you must not be doing any thing wrong.

I wish nothing but continued success for Meade County. With the community support I saw I would expect nothing less. I look forward to the continued competition.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it is that everyone here finds objectionable about his comments. First of all, if any of you know Mofield, and most of you don't, he is not a coach that is ever going to be confused with an excuse-maker. He is a straightforward, no-nonsense, hard-nosed football coach.

If he DIDN'T think that he had a shot at beating X, then he would not have made the comment later in the article beating himself up over his game plan for the offense, which he felt could have ben more effective. If the mind-set of someone was defeated before it started, he would not have said that.

He was complimentary of the St. X team and their strength. I think the KHSAA comment was merely a superfluous comment in the midst of a compliment to St. X. You all are a heck of lot smarter than that to think that that was the primary objective of his statement.

Last, and perhaps maybe most telling, is that not a single one of you have yet said that what Mofield said was incorrect. St. X is a good team. I, too, think they will beat Trinity. I think most of you, if you were being honest with yourselves, knows that the KHSAA DOES and did want to see a T and X final because of the financial possibilities, and the KHSAA will make a lot of money off of it. So where is Mofield wrong?

I tell you what, I will concede my own inaccuracy here if Scribe or someone who is more computer-oriented than I can go back to the threads for last season and see if there is not a single post from someone at St. X who said "its too bad the two best 6A teams won't be going to the finals" or words to that effect. I guarantee you there were some. You all were whining about the unfairness of the brackets last year, and now you have the unmitigated temerity to get on here and accuse Mofield of doing the same thing? Hippocrits, all of you.

And this business about Meade Co. fans whining is all bunk, too. Jeb Stuart got in one thread, the night of the game, and expressed a similar comment in frustration, and you have magnified that to include ALL Meade Co. fans as whiners.

Thank you for your compliment of Meade, but how on earth do you extrapolate the bolded from Mofield's quoted comments?

Regardless of what he meant, it comes across poorly. It sounds like 100% whining. While we cannot hear tone when reading the quote, I don't imagine that Coach said it with a tone of excitement and happiness for the KHSAA. Therefore, I assume he said it as a shot at the KHSAA.

Lets assume the KHSAA did , indeed, want X andn T. So what? Unless Coach is saying that the KHSAA assigned referees who were biased and turned a blind eye to X's penalties, why bring up the KHSAA? It reeks of pettiness and sour grapes.

Lastly, it doesn't set a good example for the players. Coaches actions and words have an impact on players. What are the players going to remember about the coach's thoughts after a great MC season? The KHSAA wanted an X andn T final - odds were stacked against us - Coach said so.

Disappointing.

I'm not saying he's a bad guy. I'm simply saying that he made a bad decision and , unlike yours and mine, that bad decision ended up in the newspaper.

I hardly believe that that is what the Meade co, players are going to remember. I also seriously doubt that the quoted material was all that Mofield said to that reporter, but its all fun to print.

What Matney at JC did last year after the Cov Cath loss was INTENDED to be a shot at the KHSAA, with that as the focal point of his comments. This was not. I know that you CovCath folks are sensitive to that, and rightfully so. But everytime a coach makes a comment about the KHSAA, or private schools, or a private having 100 players on the team, it does not always translate to sour grapes, and sometimes, as the case here, it is one line in an ocean of statements about the game itself.

As a proud product of the public school system, I could care less what one's thoughts are re: public vs private so throw that out the window.

Explain to me the value of the coach uttering the KHSAA shot. Its 100% inappropriate IMO but I'm willing to listen.

As a former player who still can quote his coach, I would disagree that this quote will not be remembered by his players.

There is a difference between saying "The KHSAA set this up so X and T could pay and play for the final, and they got what they wanted" AND

"We LOST because the KHSAA set this up so that X and T could play for the final, and they got what they wanted."

Mofield's comments were merely the former. To conclude that they were the latter you're going to have to find some other word or action that he made to support that conclusion (Like Matney from last year). To do otherwise is to put words into his mouth that don't exist. Its like Luck saying that Mofield believes X is cheating when that extrapolation is simply unfair. You're LOOKING for something else.

If I give a post game interview and I make a statement that "X had 100 guys, and we couldn't overcome it," it may just very well be me saying that one of the reasons I lost was because of superior numbers, not platooning players, and eschelons of fresh reserves. What private school supporters HEAR is "this public school is accusing us of recruiting and cheating to get the numbers we have." Its arrogant.

Don't forget "we have success cause we work harder than they do."

Then why say it? What good could come of it?

Thank you for your compliment of Meade, but how on earth do you extrapolate the bolded from Mofield's quoted comments?

My comments for Meade County are genuine. I may have fallen into this private/public abyss a little my self after re-reading my comment in context to your interpretation of it.

It is my perception, however, that quite often when St. Xavier wins a football game there was some other reasoning brought into the equation as to why they win.

Have I become too sensitive, too defensive, too anti-conspiracy theory? Maybe so. But the coach's comments are what they are. And yes he did take responsibility for the loss and complimented St. Xavier, however, the comment is there and if the report is accurate he said it.

Hearsay, read your statement above carefully. Was this a subliminal slip of the keyboard? :D
