I believe Highlands was founded in 1888 and the first football team took the field in 1915.

The school district was created in 1872. It consisted of two small schools.

 

The district's first central school (for all grades) was opened on January 2, 1885. The state allowed the district to build the school, provided it cost no more than $8,000. Some things never change. This new Central School had a (male) principal and four (female) teachers. They hired a Sperintendant in 1886. It was the first full four year high school in Campbell County. The very first graduates (all five of them) received their diplomas on June 16, 1891.

 

The district continued to experience explosive growth over the next few decades. This growth brought about the birth of the Current Highlands High School in 1915.

 

Football began at Highlands on September 17, 1915. The held their first practice, in the auditorium, the next day.

Tom Lewis was the first coach of HHS. He resided on Miami Parkway for a number of years in the old Boehne estate!

His first team (1915) consisted of just 11 players. Coach Lewis actually "filled in" a couple times for ineligible or injured players. He got tossed from one game for being a "ringer." :lol:

 

They played six of their games against out of state teams and went 4-5-2.

I went to Bell County several years ago to watch Highlands VS Bell and we, being from Cumberland went just as football fans.

 

We sat on the Highlands side and I'll say that the Highlands fans were incredible. I felt like none of the fans around me tried to make fun of me knowing I am from the mountains.

 

I will speak to anyone and I have that southern hospitality that my folks instilled in me and it was good to see that they weren't talking down to me.

 

I will never forget that and I appreciate those people that we talked to for being wonderful supporters of their school and even better representatives of their area.

Hey Scatbackskin22, I'm not sure I was one of the Highlands folks that you spoke with (probably not, as you describe the Highlands folks you spoke with as being nice people.....I had to put that in there before someone else did:D), but I had a great conversation with some folks from the mountains that were sitting near us on the visitors side. They were really nice people and knew a lot about football.

 

I know that some folks from the mountains have the preconceived notion that folks from N. Ky think poorly of them, but from my experience nothing could be further from the truth. Maybe because we sit right next door to Cinti and those dang Buckeyes are continuing looking down at us, we tend not to do the same to others. Maybe its because we see the mountains and the proud folks that live there as a big part of our Ky heritage. Maybe its because a fair number of folks up here have relatives in the mountains. I don't know for sure why it is.

 

The issue probably gets a little overblown on here. Personnally I think the fans of the mountain schools like to play the "lack of respect card" a lot as a motivational ploy. How could any knowledgeable Highlands fan not have respect for mountain teams like Belfry, Bell and Rockcastle, to name just three that we have struggled with from time to time?

 

 

Anyway, thanks for the nice words about our fans. We tend to get a little full of ourselves on this site as its easy to get a bit out of control sitting at a key board. Plus some things we type can be taken out of context. But as people get to meet Highlands fans in person, they find that for the most part we are pretty nice folks and are pretty knowledgeable about the game. Take care and best wishes.
